6BR improved

103 vapor trail, BR 4, h4895, + 5 thou..

Would highly recommend starting at 30.5 ish and creeping up 2/10ths at a time.

Tom

tom, what is your oal to the tip of the 103 bullet. I throated out 2 of my barrels today to allow more space. The bottom of boat tail is even with neck/shoulder.

I know you are getting very high speeds at least 3000, is in wrecked primer pockets to me and 3100 is just plain crazy. So I decided to throat out 2 barrels. I just measured mine to the tip of a 105 Berger VLD and it is 2.446". I`m thinking it will allow more powder at less pressure and for me at my elevation and humidity hit the 2980 node without damage to primer pockets. The bearing surface of the Berger 105 is half way in the neck. I had to throat them out .070 to .080" to get there. My old length must have been close to yours now.

I am not well into testing the BR-Ackley especially for top end speeds. I also do chambering that will well assist increased speed, just wanted to add free help getting there. Thats the last link to help me to become a total promoter of this case, getting the numbers. The ease is there, the accuracy is there, but till I see whats being told here for myself. I`m not going to promote...... yet. But,.... I`m warming up.

I`ll never try 3100, just not thinking its appropriate for that size case. But 2980 to 3030 may just be another thing. If so I`ll be on cloud 9.

Those are impressive speeds.

Our range has overhead baffles to restrict errant shots from leaving the range. It has my hands tied to use a chronograph, as it is shaded this time of year. Summer sun angles are fine, just not now. I dont own a Labradar.

Only reason I even use a chrony is because the labradar is so easy to setup. Its worth the $$$. Not sure it will help you shoot any better though, but the data is interesting.

It's just something that keeps repeating in my data when going over these ladder tests. Don't worry, we're not taking "yuge" ES. I just keep finding it funny how 15fps es, will shoot 1/3 the vertical of a 5 fps es group. Even though, both are fired alternating shots in order to take conditions out of it.....It's on the order of way better than 50% of the time it works out that way, so we have a laugh over it.

Tom

I'm always telling about this over on SH concerning ladder testing at distance. People don't believe it, that a low ES load can be out done at distance with less vertical by a slighty higher ES load in the middle of the node. Those two aspects don't always coincide perfectly together.

At 100Y I'm not overly concerned with the tightest groups, or the lowest ES. For long range I want that magical zone where a node gives the smallest vertical, once achieved the ES will be good enough.

To shoot those truly tiny groups you need to have positive compensation. I am talking those little 1" vertical groups at 1k. To shoot sub 5" you can get away with other methods. But those little ones always happen at the overlap point on a ladder and usually have 15 es or so. Almost without fail.

Do you find positive compensation to be distance specific? Not so much about 100 yards, but rather the 700-1200 range. Will the ideal 1k load keep those favorable characteristics if you shoot it a bit closer, or a bit father?

PC is by definition distance specific. Id take a 1k load to 600 before a 600 load to 1k. Remember when I am talking pc I am not talking good groups, I am talking tiny groups.

I would really like to see how Tom's 1k pc load shoots at 200 yards.

If that was a possibility, ideally for my mind I would like to see that in a 5 shot group.

I really need it to warm up around here. Keyboard only shooting is killing me. LOL

I can tell you the last barrel I shot in competition which did set some agg records would shoot ladders like that. Overlapped in the 1s for vertical at 1k. It was .25 moa at 100yds at best. I mean at BEST.
