6br rl-15 loads

My 6br doesn't seem to like varget, even though I tried smk 107's & berger 95 vld. But when I tried rl-15 30 gr with the berger 95's the 4 shot grp improved well.
Does anyone have any load data for 95 gr rl-15? Rifle has an 8 twist. Any reply would be appreciated.
Thanks, Greg

Test between 30-32gns or R15 with the 95's. I found happiness with the 95SMK near the upper end at nearly 3100fps.

I had some nice groups with 29.5 RL15 and 95 VLD's seated right at the riflings. Using a 1:9 twist Hart barrel. I think I can still improve it some though.

tii,These berger 95's were jammed .010. I'm going out today & try the same load. Then I'll work up from there. Let us know how you do with the 95's & the rl-15. What bullets are you using?

I'm using the Berger 95VLD. Haven't tried the Sierra 95 gr yet. I will be working on some more loads this weekend. I've only had the rifle about three weeks now. Lot's to learn for sure.

Jimmy,
Are you maxed out with this load? If you don't mind, what primers are you using?
Thanks for the info, Greg

I am using both the SIE 107 and Berger 108BT with 30.6 grains of RL-15. Yeah it is warm, but is working in my rifle.. may not in yours.. work up to it.

Gambleone,

I use CCI BR4 primers. I tried 2 tenths higher and my groups opened up some so I stopped there. I use this load in a Dtech 6BR AR.

don't laugh butI have been using R15 with 68gr Barts and shooting my best ever. might seem a little slow but it works for me.

Wow, am I the only one shooting Varget here ?

It does great anywhere between 50-100F temperature, using 30gr Varget and Sierra MK 107gr.

Anytime it misses the X ring, it's me.

Andy,

No, you're not, not by a long shot. But the man did ask specifically for RL-15 loads in the thread title ;)

FWIW, while my first 6mm BR got an exclusive diet of Varget, my second one has been fed RE-15 only... doesn't necessarily seem to shoot any better or worse. Still shoots great: 30.1gr RE-15 behind a 107SMK 0.020 off hard jam ignited by a CCI450 primer in a Lapua case, fired down a Lilja three-groove 1-8" twist 29.5" fluted medium Palma contour... definitely a sweety of a gun and a joy to shoot.

And soon to be re-chambered to 6-6.5x47L if things work the way I'm planning...

Andy,
I was using varget with smk 107's which did great at 100 yds but on out a ways opened up not affected much by seat depth. I've since switched back to varget & changed to berger 105 vld's 15 thou jam & doing better than the varget smk 107 combo. Haven't shot the 105's with re-15 yet. Thanks for all the feedback.

Monte, Greg,

Thanks both for the reply, I thought people had jumped ship on Varget. I have tried RE-15 several times and does work okay. Doesn't like big temperature changes, or shooting under the sun though.

I've found,by mistake) that I've mixed loads incorrectly with as much as half grain difference of Varget, and the bullet would still print inside the X-ring at 600 yds, wow.

Tried that with Re-15 and the 6BR, as an experiment, and outcome was not the same, quite on the negative side.

Then I tried the same experiment with 308W, and oh momma, there was a full minute difference in elevation at 600 yds with just half grain short of Re-15. Varget, on the other hand, was just as forgiving in the 6BR as it was in this 308W experiment. And accurate of course. Go figure.

Anyone has had same results, or is it my particular lot of Re-15 ?

Andy

I started with Varget, it shot alright but started getting troubles with warmer loads.
Switched to benchrest got less troubles and more accuracy, now i'm trying RE - 15 with even better results again.

I use 30.4 grains of RL 15,in my 1/8 twist) behind some Berger 105 VLD's with good results at 600 yds.

I found out that this load in the Louisiana heat will make the 6BR look like a belted round. I switched to Varget for the summer and I will shoot the ones I have loaded when it gets colder,,in La. this is few and far between).

Ditto on what Jimmy said.

I've gone back to Varget after experiencing pressure issues with RL-15. Not worth the trouble and risk. Very much like TAC, accurate but unstable. Have shot some of my best scores and tightest groups with TAC, but be aware, very.

Same happened with my 308 Palma and RL-15. Whatever small accuracy potential might exist quickly disappears when pressure spikes start to throw shots in a vertical string. Not fun at 1000 yds.

Varget has proven quite forgiving, very accurate and less temperamental than other powders. True, it won't measure as easy as TAC or RL-15, but that's the price to pay for 'cheap' insurance.
