6br for a 100/200 lv rig? Am I crazy?

After knowing darn well the 6ppc and more recently the 30br are dominating the 100/200 yard game, I decided to get a LV rig built for a 6br. I must be crazy. To further my insanity, or build upon it if you will, I decided to go with a 12 twist and really buck conventional wisdom. Jerry Stiller is putting the rig together for me. I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm nuts too, but he has not told me directly, and seems to understand the reasoning for my choices. The rig is a Diamondack action, SG&Y stock, Jewell trigger, Shilen barrel, and I picked up a Leupold 40x to sit on top. My madness stemmed from the idea that I wanted to be able to shoot the 80gr bullets and maybe catch a little advantage in less than perfect conditions, especially at 200yds, when everybody else is using a 6ppc with light bullets, and take advantage of the high quality 6br brass from Lapua with minimal prep. ,I hate brass work although I do turn necks, reluctantly) I'm having the throat cut for .060 freebore so I can seat the 68's up to the 80's, and I'm going with a .266 neck and a short max heavy barrel to make weight with finished length somewhere around 21". This is quite a leap of faith, but I figure if chances are not taken, then we don't learn anything. I'll be tinkering with loads this year, and hope to compete with this rifle next year if all goes well. I gotta be a rebel!!!! Wish I could just stand in line with everybody else, but it's just not me.

In my opinion the PPC would have been a better choice! That said, I am the last one in the world to advise anyone not to go with what they want and think is a good idea.
If everyone just adhered to what everyone else is doing life would be one dam boring experience, but then some people can't see beyond there own noses are destined to be followers.
Just yesterday I was asked why I wanted to investigate a Swiss cartridge when there is already the 6BR, 6-264, 30-06, and whatever. I guess he's happy in is little world so I didn't bother with a response.
If you have an idea and enough intelligence concerning what you are doing, don't let anyone lead you over to a place in that line you hate so much!!
Good luck, and take care. Changeling.

Anmlsr,

I say go for it. Yes, chances are it won't run with a top-level 6PPC at 100, but you well might do better at 200. You should contact AlinWA, who regularly posts on Benchrest.com . He has done a lot of work on short-range accuracy with 6BR cases. He believes fireforming with a crush fit is the key to getting super-accurate brass.

I'm glad to see someone trying something new. If we all just played follow the leader we'd still be shooting round balls and black powder. Getting any gun to shoot in the zeros with be difficult, but I think if you can get a really good chamber cut, you might be able to see some impressive accuracy. Keep us informed on your progress.

Well, after tinkering with loads and conditions this summer, I'll know what it can and can't do. If it is good enough, it will be shot at matches. I'm not expecting .0's, but I'm sure I'll get lucky now and then. The idiot on the trigger could not do it consistently even if the gun and cartridge could. But I do fully expect the gun to stay competitive at 100, and I'm hoping for very competitive at 200. The shooter is another matter entirely.

The thing is with the Diamond back action etc if you don`t have a lot of success at short range as in 100 & 200m change the barrel to 30BR and use the 6Br for longer F class shoots I have the bug at the moment also and am starting to build a 30Br and will also have a 6mm BRX barrel for longer range shooting I was going to go with the Diamondback action but too much trouble to import so using a Barnard Action.

Don't cut yourself short! Do your best, which I think you will, are you wouldn't be hear talking about it!! Just keep in mind the the shooter is a good percentage of the total equation, so THINK positive!

Moderator, This is the way "ANY" accuracy oriented case should be set up. If it is a modified case such as an Ackley, it is mandatory for a crush fit to keep from stretching the brass in the web area which you will see as a light yellow/whatever line about 3/10 's from the base if it is not head spaced right.

I am currently having a 6BR built for 500m "Fly" matches here in Oz. Mine will have a PacNor 1 in 8" twist barrel fitted. I was going to give it a run at 100yard and 200yard benchrest matches for fun. I second what was said earlier - pretty boring if we all did the same i reckon!!

Cheers
Matt
