6br brass?

I am new to the 6br stuff. I was reading that the new lapua brass necks are .268 loaded. So if I buy a 6br barrel with a .268 neck chamber does that mean I shouldn't have to neck turn my brass. Or would I be better off getting a .272 barrel. Or am I over thinking this and just buy the lapua brass and size it, load it, and then shoot it. Please help me out becuase like I said I am new to the br stuff and am very interested in getting into it.

No, new brass loaded will be between .267" and .268". If you have a .270" neck in your chamber you will be fine.

The old brass was .269" to .270". Not enough clearance with a .270" chamber neck.

You want at least .002" total clearance, some recommend .004".

Now you done changed all your numbers on me!!! LOL

New Lapua---.2675" loaded.

You need .270" chamber.

My recent purchase of Blue box Lapua has a .2687 to .269 neck Dia with a bullet seated.
Could we have a pressure ring measurement on the bullet? Or better yet what bullet is that?

I'm in the process of fire-forming 6BR to BRX, and breaking in the Krieger barrel, using a local made 85 gr. HPFB (J-4 jackets) bullet that does have a pressure ring that measure .2435". My loaded round neck diameter using the new blue box Lapua is .2685", working fine with my .270" neck. With the Sierra 95 gr. MatchKing's loaded round neck diameter is .268" maximum.

So what you guys are telling me is to buy a barrel with the neck chambered to .270 if I am going to be using lapuas new brass that when it is loaded it measures .268.

Dave Kiff at PTG has a reamer for the new blue box brass. There is a drawing of it in a post somewhere on this site.

Ok, I guess what I'm getting at is that I am looking for the best combination to get without reaming any necks. So what I am trying to say is I will be buying Lapua brass and was wondering what neck chamber size I should get my barrel made in (example .270). I would like to buy some brass, size the brass, load the brass, and then shoot the brass and repeat the process without reaming or turning the necks. I am just a newbie to the 6br world so I would like to just slowly work my way into into it without making this too difficult in the begining of the process. So is this possible and if so, how?

ecgate: When you say "ream" I'm assuming what you mean is outside neck turning? Using the old cardboard box Lapua 6BR with the .013" to .0135" thick neck walls the several chamberings I have in 6BR work fine with .272" no turn chamber necks. Now that I'm beginning to use the newer blue box, that have neck walls that are .012" to .0125" thick, the .270" chamber neck is working fine. Neither require any outside neck turning/ load 'em up as they come out of the box. ;)

When I said reamer, I was referring to the chamber reamer, not neck turning. The drawing is below, and if I'm reading it properly, it uses a 0.2704" neck. Not sure where you are in your build, but the factory 6BR Savages based on my experience seem to use a .2715" neck. It works well with the older cardboard box brass if you can find it.

I recently had the same query. I called dave kiff and before I had the words "no turn blue box" out of my mouth, he rattled off the spec of the chamber reamer I needed. .270 chamber neck is what he spec'd. If you can justify the cost of owning your own reamer you might consider ringing pt&g, he's exceptionally helpful, however I suspect at this point there's gotta be a lot of .270 reamers out there. It's hardly a big expense though if you are rebarreling anyway.

You need to have some clearance between the loaded round and the neck of the chamber! measure the loaded rounds very carfully and turn necks if you need more clearance or go a lot larger on the neck size. When you don't have muck clearence the carbon from firing needs to be cleaned offen.
