6BR barrel length 20"

A friend gave me a LW barrel 6BR ,20" length ,1/8 twist . What speed and accuracy can I expected
from this barrel with 105 grs bullets? The shooting distance will be 500/600 m .

Thanks in advance ,

Michel

You will have to work up a load and see. 6brs are an inherently accurate cartridge. The rest is up to the quality of the barrel and the skill of the operator.

Speed is an unknown; if it is a fast barrel, you might get 2800 fps. If it's a slow one, you might only get 2500 fps. Regardless of how fast it will go, it will be very accurate as long as there isn't something else wrong with the gun or the barrel. The 6BR is well suited to shooting 500-600 meters. What type of rifle/receiver are you putting it on?

Thanks,

The action is a Sako L 579 target (single shoot) . I have a Solle Panda with 3 barrel's chamberd in 6 BR ,length 24" to 26,5" and yes I really know
about accuracy potential of this cartridge but I just would like to know if someone had/have an experience with a short barrel.

I've got a 20" 6br Shilen 8 twist. Runs 105's @ 2750 with 30.0 Varget. Most accurate for this barrel has been Benchmark @ 2700. Don't remember the charge right now.

I’m currently working loads now for a this setup. Rem action. Bartlein 8 tw at 22”. Throated for the 105 Bergers. I’ve had better results with N540 in the bench guns, so that’s what I’m playing with first. So far, 1/4” groups at 2,780’s. Once I find what it likes, I’ll post all the info.

I shot Barts 80gr. BT with 8208 and it would be hard to find anything to shoot better... jim

Jim,

Do you shoot the Barts 80 gr with a 1/8 twist ? I have some Sierra 85 grs but the CB is poor ,what do you think about this bullet ?

No, my freeborn is too long I shot them out of a 12 twist, but I feel they would shoot ok. I would bet the 85 and 95's would be more suitable... jim

No, butI have some pretty good 95 gr. Spencers, and some Berger 95's that check out pretty good, I would try the 95's out it first and see how long your free bore is.... jim

An update on the Br progress. First, the reamer is a .272 no turn/no throat reamer. We throat the barrel to whatever bullet/setting depth is chosen With a throating reamer.
The seating depth with a stony point comerator is 1.805”. COL averages 2.400”. (Maplat deviations) So they’re hanging out pretty far.
N540 at 31grs was what it likes. Velocity is 2,840’s. I started at 30grs and tested in .2 grains increments. CCI 450 primers. I’m using a .267 bushing if that answers any curiosity. It’ll see some use here in Pa on the groundhogs very shortly. Oh, and I’ll also practice the 6’ social distancing rule with my spotter.
