6br barrel length

wondering what is a good barrel length for a 6br in a varmint rig, thinking 24, 25, 26 inches . Most shots around 400- 600 yds

I just had one built in 10 twist. The barrel is 26 inches on a gun designed to shoot varmints out to 600 yds max.

30" will give you a couple of set backs...

Not sure if you`re needing to make weight or not.

Phil.

Take a look at the accomplishments Richard Shatz has enjoyed with his 26" Remington Varmint contour barrels at 1000 yards ;)

I am looking at 1-8 twist trying to keep weight at a varmint level, have a heavy bench gun 6br 29 inch barrel . thinking a 25- 26 sendaro type contour, any thoughts???

I had Jim Hart put an 8 twist, 23-1/2" magnum contour barrel on my 700 action. It's an all-purpose calling, prairie dog and occasional deer / hog gun.

It's very accurate and I'm getting decent velocities - 3,140 fps with the 80 grain Berger and 2,965 fps with the 85 grain Sierra GameKing. It works for what I want it to do and I wouldn't change a thing.

I don't think you can go wrong for 400-600. I use the same for g-hogs, 1-8", 27" with 105 class bullets. I planned on using it for the closer shots than the 6.5x284 and eventually have used it for about everything out to 800. It exceeded my expectations.

I would go 26" you can always cut some off if you are getting what you want, and would like it a little shorter.

I couldn't choose between 26 and 28 so I made it easy and told the smith to chop it at 27" :)

If the shooting is from a bench , not registered competition, build it heavy enough so you don't loose sight picture when it goes BANG !!. You want to see the the target . build another for hunting that is carryable in the field.

Mine is a 26" Sendero contour. Perfect for what I do, but a little muzzle heavy to carry around a lot.

Stock weight and barrel contour are big factors. A 26 inch Remington Varmint contour is one of my favorite sizes with an H.S. Precision or Bell and Carlson stock that has some weight to it.

For a light or heavy varmint contour I would go shorter so the gun balances better, assuming a similar stock.

With a light stock I would go with a 23 or 24 inch barrel in a smaller diameter bull barrel contour.
