barrel length questions

Hi all - first post here. I'm starting a 6br build with the following:

Savage 110,pre accutrigger) action with a McGowen 6br 1:8 stainless barrel in a Savage bull profile.

This rifle will be my "reach out and touch the prairie dog" gun, all from a bench, so weight is not an issue. I can get the barrel up to 34" long.

What is the optimum barrel length for shooting 100gr+ bullets in this caliber?

Thanks in advance!

Most folks consider 30" to be about the longest practical bore to use with popular cartridges.

The speed gained with increases in barrel length are offset by the increase in fouling in the longer barrels due to the higher velocity & increased friction.

If you want to try a longer-than-30" barrel & then have problems, you can have it shortened. Easier to do that than make it longer!

fat_46,

Don't pay extra for a longer barrel. Get what comes standard and leave it as long as you can. I shoot 600 yd Benchrest, I runn 28" max. I have shot 30" plus, you don't gain much. Not worth the extra cost.

Because your going with a 6BR, I would suggest a 28" 1-8 twist barrel. If you were going with a cartridge like a 6x284 or 6MM AI, I would say go with a 30" barrel. The 28" is plenty for a 6BR.

For my 6BR project, I went with a Bartlein, 28", 1-8 twist, 236 bore barrel. For the diameter, I went with a 1.250 straight taper all the way to the muzzle and added flutes.

Go with a 28" barrel, it will be perfect.

I have found no practical advantage to going with anyting longer than 28". Furthermore, unless you are using a light contour or a barrel block, 30" is getting to be a bit much to hang off an action.
