6BR and AI mags?

I have a rem 700 5R in 308 that never has shot too great and am thinking about having a 6BR or something along those lines done. The stock is a B&C medalist A5 type and it has been inletted for a CDI bottom metal that takes 5 and 10 rd AI 308 mags. What will feed from this mag or am I looking at replacing the whole stock and bottom metal to do this? If I have to replace stock and mag set-up then I might be leanig to a savage12 LRPV, are they GTG? The smith that I plan on having the work done has 6BR and 6Dasher reamers, would either one work in this mag set-up? Also what is involved in making a 6 dasher? Sorry to be a newb and thanks in advance.

There's an article in Guns of the week with AI mags & the 6BR.

See http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek032.html

That should help a bit for you.

Thanks for the heads-up. I wonder what he used as a spacer in the front of the mag? Maybe some delrin machined to fit. I plan on going 6br and was just going to get another B&C A2 stock and roll but I beleive I will wait for the rifle to get done and see what I can rig up with my current set-up. 700 blueprinted with a Bartlein 1-13.5 LV profile, no turn neck .271 or .272. Free bore cut to work best with 65-68 gr. BO rail and rings with a 6.5-20x50 Loopy VX-3 LR and a RB LV-1 trigger set at 1 lb.

It will be interesting to see if you can get it to feed from the AI mag without any hiccups.
I couldn't get my Rem model 7 custom to feed the 6BR from the internal magazine even
with the cutdown 308 follower, 223 mag box & spring satisfactory. Now I've BRX'd it I might
try again as the slightly longer case will help alot I'd expect. The 6BRX in the AI mag might be a less troublesome proposition for you :)

Another thing I thought about after my post was the belgian rifle was using a lot longer bullet (105) then what I plan on using. This might be wrench in the gears, won't know till I try it I guess, hopefully I can test it with out having to hack up a 75 dollar mag :o

Have you thought of chambering to the 6XC? Accuracy is great, great brass is now available if that is important to you and they feed from the AI mags perfectly.

Yeah I thought about it and a 6x47L but both of them offer nothing over my 2 243 fast twist that I have. If I did not have either of those then the 6xc or 6x47 would be a good choice

Not crying success yet, but mocked up some 6br rds(5) w/ 68 gr bergers and feed them through the mag and into the rifle fine. Every length from 1/8" seated in the neck to the FB below the neck/shoulder junction. I did no mag mods and tried feeding them at the front middle and rear of the mag and everything seemed to work fine. Extraction could be an issue as these rds were still going into the 308 chamber and couldn't check extraction as is. Even had them loaded in the mag like 303brit/220swift, staggered forward, all good. If it extracts decent I will leave as is. The only hiccup I have seen it do is sometimes, 1-30 or so, when pushing a rd up the feedramp the tip will catch on the edge of the chamber. I am sure if you got aggressive with it it would chamber, but if I just stop and retract the bolt a 1/16 of an inch it realigns itself and goes right in. When cycling the bolt at a brisk pace the rds load really smoothly. Hopefully when the real barrel is on it with the correct chamber it will still feed this good and extract decent. For a sometimes varmint rifle and club level match gun it should be GTG.
