6BR feeding from an AI mag

I can get 2 mag springs from one ak 30 rd spring. The ak spring is from an arsenal223 mag. The follower took about 5 minutes with a razor and bastard file. The front leg needed to be narrowed just a whisker, a little more on the rear leg. I just had to file a notch on each side for the rib on the AI mag. The ak spring i used fits perfectly between the anti tilt legs. The most time spent was on the poly block about 10 minutes. I tested it repeatedly and it was flawless, so i drilled a hole in the back of the mag tube and put a button head screw to retain the spacer. Good luck finding any magpul followers or ak springs.

The follower I used was a anti tilt follower out of a Brownells mag. Do not trim your anti tilt legs, been there done that, you need them to keep the follower level. 1 AK 5.45 spring made 2 mags for me too. When I built the new followers on the mill I made the top just like the AI follower but I think the step could stand to be a little steeper.

We have a bunch of other stuff we are working on, but we may revisit this. In the meantime, I am pretty happy with the way the 223 AI mags work when I open the lips up a bit.

The 22 BR really offers quite a bit more to the varmint shooter in my opinion to make this project worthwhile. But the 223 AI is almost as good and alot less trouble....

you have less to worry about the feeding than the ejection!

I've just built a 6br on a Rem700 and feeding is actually pretty good, My problem is the ejection of the case.

The 6br case is so short, that with the standard ejector in the 2 oclock position the neck of the case rests against the lug recess once it comes out of the chamber, and is at such an accute angle it actually looses contact with the ejector plunger and falls off the bolt head onto the loading bay. see vid

The fix is to install a sako extractor which move the angle to 3 oclock so the neck of the case on no in hte lug recess area....but nobody bother to explain that this introduces another issue!

As the sako extractor move the fulcrum point from 2 oclock to 3 oclock, the case now ejects at a more vertical angle and hits the scope turret then falls back into the loading bay.

I now have to fit a small shield to deflect it!@#$%

The 6br case just isnt ideal for a repeater!
Bingo! The voice of experience. Getting it to feed is not such a problem. I think the best solution is to use a 223REM AICS magazine: it's dirt simple. The magazine is already the proper length, so you don't need to mess with anything except the feed lips. Simply open them up with a dremel(the magazine is plastic) until the 6BR case sits high enough. It's about a 10 minute job and feeding is flawless.

The real challenge is extraction because the case is so short, it does not work as reliably....cases left in the action. I'm going to try a 6BRX case since the overall case length is .100" longer.....will post results when finished.

I would have to agree. If it wont extract/eject its is such a pain. While I dont have those issues with my Remingtons chambered in 22 BR, I suppose the ejection could be some crisper.

My own choice of the 6mm's is the original 6x. As most of you know, it is basically the 243 shortened by .135". The problem with it is, when you stop .135" short with the 243 reamer, you sometimes have resizing issues. I had mine done with a dedicated 6x reamer and they are excellent rifles. I dont have a 6 BR to compare them against, but I am very satisfied the accuracy I am seeing. Plus it feeds slick as snot!

I just wonder why there isnt more love for the original 6x on this forum!

Isn't 6X vs 6XC splitting hairs?....i.e. they are both very good cartridges and the 6XC is "theoretically" a little better with brass/barrel life? Personally, I use a 6BRX, but think the 6X/6XC is a better magazine-fed solution.

I would absolutely say the 6x and 6xc are splitting hairs. I just was in on the 6x BEFORE the 6xc was created and saw no reason to change. Still dont. I would agree the improved 6BRs would be better, as a matter of fact, some here have tried them both and found the BRs hold vertical better at long range. Im more of a steel banger/coyote murderer so I am well satisfied with the 6x for now. If I can ever perfect a magazine for the shorter case I will just have to have one of the improved 6BRs tho!

i am about to try and do a repeater on a tikka t3, anybody have any input? i have a friend who just built a 6br on a fn spr which is controlled round feed which he says it solving the extraction issue and the feeding. He is using modified 223 aics mags.

Case length is the same, the shoulder is the only thing moved the .100".

I've had two 22 Dasher, and now have two 6 Dashers, all for coyote calling guns, all built on 700's, no magazine mods have been done, and they all feed and eject just fine.

I would not tolerate a single shot calling gun.....

Actually i think the ejection is sometimes to crisp on a Remington6br. As soon as the nk clears the chamber it is slammed against the inside of the action. That, to me, is when the extractor lets go and the empty is left in the action. The savage has a milder ejector and, imho, a better extractor then a stock Remington. Those two things combined gave me 0 FTE in 300 ish rds. The rifle is now in an aics, the other day prone off a harris and beanbag shot a .328 9 shot and a 5 shot that measured .401" with 4 going into .121". Yeah i shanked the 4th shot.

That's why I usually trim 2-3 coils off the ejector spring, first so it doesn't throw the empties into next week, second so it doesn't put such a flat spot on the precious necks.
