62gr barnes 22-250

Im looking for a 60-70gr bullet that drops about the same as the 62gr barnes out to 400yards. I have a never fired ,just finished 22-250 with a heavy taper 9 twist 26" barrel, jewell trigger ,hs precision stock. Built it to shoot 62gr barnes and 60 gr partitions, for use on whitetail deer and wild hogs. But would like to have a more accurate 1st and cheaper bullet 2nd to practice and play with. Is the 69gr sierra a good choice? I'd also like to hear of any first hand knowledge of the 62ge barnes on game.
thanks
Robert

Hi,

I am afraid I can't help on the 60 grain plus side, but I have used the Hornady SP in 55 grain, and frankly, while I have moved to the VMAX, the SP outshoots it accuracy wse and it is cheap.

60g Nosler partition is devistating on hogs and deer, if your rifle shoots them 1 1/2" at 100, you are good to go.

Velocity makes the barnes open up, the 60g partition will never fail you. Maybe you need to try a few different loads, h3450 with win primers worked for me, about a max load for the rifle.

The 62 grain Barnes has a BC of .287.(not the tipped version)

So just pick a cheaper bullet that has a similar BC, run it at the same speed as your Barnes, and your drops and drifts will be similar.

I shoot 62 gr TSX's in my AR on deer. Devastating bullet. I used to shoot 60 gr Partitions which is a good bullet as well but it won't run with the TSX's. I BELIEVE that they brought out a TTSX as well this year & if they did you'll have a little faster upset & better BC. I have punched thru shoulders & out the other side at 250+ yds at 223 velocity. NO PROBLEM. Love that bullet.

I have found a great load with 69gr SMK and Varget. only fired two 3 shot groups at this time but they are .221" and .249". I tried some 62gr remington hp match bullets and have not found a good load yet. The way it looks I'll stick with the SMK's. These are the smallest groups I have ever shot ! I have a informal match this weekend and need to fire 20 shots in 20 minutes . Will that be to much and hurt my barrel ?

i have had a lot of experiance with the 69 and 77gr SMK they shoot great and atthe velocity you get should do your job. Also the Sierra 65 SBT is a great choice and the bc is about 300.

Shoot 73 gr Berger LTB or 63 gr Sierra GK. The 69 SMK is accurate, but if you use it on game, it may not open up. It does not at 223 velocity.

Story....Several of us Barnes guys up here in the northeast have been trying to get a grip on these VG.s but have failed miserably. The company tells us they are VERY long for caliber due to the filler being lighter (less dense) than lead and will need a faster twist than normal to stabilize.
for instance...a 12" twist should be fine to stabilize any 50gr bullet and in my case this is true...my 12" shoots and loves most everyone's 50gr. Sierra, Hornady, and Nosler. I've shot a .225" 5-shot with my Contender pistol, OK? 50gr V.G.s will keyhole at 50yds out of my gun with zillions of load combos. Yeh, they're going into the paper sideways !!
In 6mm, the 62gr V.G. sprays around something fierce while 70gr anybrands will shoot 1-1 1/2" at 200 yd in my .243Win. The box clearly states 10" twist or better but my 10" can't get it done. Lapau brass, match primers, many powders, etc. Just can't get it to shoot.
I have many good accurate loads with many types of Barnes bullets in many calibers but NOT with any V.G.s Don't waste you time, components, and barrel life on them. Shoot anything else.
From a sad Barnes supporter.

I like Barnes for anything but varmint. I too have tried the VG and it plain stinks in everything I try. I have shot the TTSX in my duece and it does ok. I like the TTSX in 7mm and other bigger calibers and love the 130 for my 308 on deer. Just have floopped witht he VG. I actually gave them away to a guy I do not like!

a 60 gr sierra under vv550 in my friends 14 twist 22-250 shoot under 1/2 in at 100 yds all day. my kreiger barrel 22-250 shoots 60 gr bergers under vv540, 37 gr ,jumped about 30 thous, making tiney holes in paper and large holes in ghogs. my 8 twist 22-250 will spin apart 60 berger most of the time...they are varmint bullets. the 60's may not stabilize in slow twist if velocity is not sufficient. there are so many neat bullets to shoot and the day isn't long enough. [/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you. BANG!

FWIW,
I use the 120TTSX in my 7-08 and went on a quest like yours to find a similar inexpensive bullet with same characteristics for bench and trigger time.
I found the 120Nosler Ballistic tip to have a near identical velocity and ballistic curve. They DO print about 3"s higher at 100 but it's just a matter of elevation adjustment and the rest of the stuff is very close.
