600 yard Registered IBS matches at the Manatee

Manatee IBS 600 Registered Matches

We are proud to announce that we will be holding 5 registered 600 yard IBS matches at the Manatee Gun and Archery club. They will be held on the fourth Saturday of each month starting on November 25, 2017. http://internationalbenchrest.com/schedule/long_range.php We have 16 quality concrete benches under a solid overhead. Shooters should bring their own chairs as those provided are probably not going to be satisfactory.

Around the range will be 3 NRA wind flags set at approximately 100, 300 and 500 yards, in addition to 3 or 4 field flags. We welcome and encourage shooters to set up their own field flags. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Registration will close promptly at 8:30, IBS safety briefing at 8:45 and call to the line at 9:00 am.

Match fees will be $10 per rifle / per class. All shooters must also register with the Manatee Gun Club and pay the daily shooting fee. Currently that is $5 for members and $20 for guests.

Equipment specifications and all other match rules will follow all current “IBS Rules of Competition”, rulebook #13 updated Jan 2016.

Some good points: High berms run the full length on each side of the range. Covered firing points and space provided for equipment under roof. Match will be held at the designated Bench Rest range away from the public range. We specifically selected these dates to follow our annual snowbird season. Why not plan on bringing your equipment and shoot while the wife and family enjoy our beaches. We will be using the custom match software provided by Mike McBride. Many thanks to him for providing and helping with our getting it running properly.

Some issues to consider: We have set up the target line at 602 yards from the front of the shooting benches. The impact berm for sigthers between the targets is at approximately 628 yards. This does create a significant difference in elevation. Check your elevation charts to adjust for on-target hits. For many it seems to be about ½ to 3/4 MOA. Weed control is another issue. By November the Florida rains should have abated and that should not be the range problem it is in summer. We plan on laying a thick layer of rock salt after again spraying killer on the bank so you can see your sight-in impacts easily.

We would also welcome anyone interested in practice to shoot our October 28th match. Though this will not be a registered match, so no points, it would let you get a feel for the range and check out our facility. Manatee is one of the few places in South Florida to offer a shoot like this.

Manatee Gun Club has a number of RV sites with electric and water. Contact the club for information and reservations.

If interested in our shoots, please PM me. Steve Krauss “BT1”

Goodluck on your matches!
I hope to be able to come shoot someday.

TomE

Thanks for the wishes of good luck.

If everyone comes with a positive attitude, I think these matches may turn out to be a destination. Always has to be a first time to get these things going. If we get a good turn-out for these matches, then I can see expanding the schedule. Steve

All those 600 yard guys in the south east need to bring their rifles when they head down in the winter to get sun burns!

Hey John,

It should be a good turnout in October. Again no points, but you get to dial in the berm target difference. See you then.

Steve, I have a question. I haven't been down to Manatees in a while, will the 600 yarder be available for use after the days event?

Don,
Especially now with the main public line down for major renovations, Testing will be allowed after the match. We will not turn it into an alternative to the main line. Only those that shot the match will have the opportunity to shoot a few more groups if there are volunteer RSOs willing to supervise. Everyone is doing this work voluntarily to support matches. There are no paid RSOs at this time. Steve

I can answer that. The answer is a definite "maybe".

We, meaning the actual benchrest shooters using that range and running the shoot, are the RSO's. Some shooters recently took the class just to be helpful doing the shoots. The club requires a non-shooting NRA/Manatee RSO to oversee all shooting on that range. To pay a club RSO would cost us about $15 per hour or maybe more. That is why we have to do it ourselves. That also means who is running the line cannot shoot. Bit of a bummer reward for working. We started this project with only Steve and me as RSO's. Three other shooters just took the class and got certified so we do have five of us now.

If one of the RSO shooters wants to stay and work the line so others can shoot that would be fine. Now you will also have to either bring or buy targets. After the end of your practice all the target frames would have to be removed and stored away. That normally takes my quad and trailer, plus the ability to open the storage building and put things away. When/if things dry out, a club cart could be used instead of my 4 x 4 quad.

Another option for practice is what we do now. We can use the gongs there and a smaller target frame can be used. That target frame and target must be right up against the backstop at about 625 yards. Then everything must be taken down, except the gongs, when done.

The answer is maybe and has been done. RSO and clean-up are the issues. We WANT shooters and want to practice. Talk us into it and explain to my wife why I am gone so much.

We had to enter Y for all to be IBS members for the program to work fully. For now it looks like it will only post winners if entered as an IBS member. All working fine. Here is a scan of the HG page print. I included several of the past 600 yard simple excel results.

Looking for more shooters for our last "club " match on Oct 28th. Range is looking better and better. Sighting berm is much cleaner and we cut a bunch of weeds and grass. Steve

I see a couple small ones in there. :) Looks good. Your the man Steve, keep up the good work.
The "small ones" were all with your LG bra. Looks like I will have to retire a 1,25" straight Dasher barrel. Have a 8tw 1.25" straight blank here, may send the blue Bat action and barrel to you for chambering, or have Dana cut one. He has a reamer, but need to check how close his is to yours.

Great shoot .
Congratulations to Richard Prince
It was his first time shooting 600 yd paper . I had no idea you couldn't count to 5 .
So he ended DQ on the first target. Target 2 he had small for the shoot and small in the 4th.
Richard your Fired
I loaded you 43 bullets and you returned the gun and I had 9 bullets left .
Great job . I don't know anyone who can take a gun sighted in at 1000 . And have that results .
Not only has the club got a new shooter .
We got a great person and a hard worker.
Thank you're friend Larry
