600 yard bullet

Hi guys, I just put together a 17lbs 6br with a 26" 1:8 twist .272neck, Shillen barrel that will be used exclusivly for 600yd bench rest.

Instead of buying a box of every brand, weight, size, and shape bullet all at once I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. This spring when its warmer I will spend the time and money to test a wider range. For now I will just start with a few boxes.

Keep in mind, this is for 600 yard paper punching only. Thanks.

BTW: The price does'nt matter but availability does. I hate falling in love with something a cant get any more of.

Best bullets probably in 95 - 108 grain range; easiest to obtain, probably Sierra and Berger. Clinch River and JLK are good custom bullets, you might wait a little longer for those. Buying the right bullet is a crapshoot.

Thanks guys, Its funny you mention the VLDs, they were the first bullet I purchased for my .260 and they were the only ones I could not get to shoot well out of that gun.

I know all chambers are different so I will definately put them on top of the list. They do seem to have better quality control than Sierra and are easy to find.

I guess I will start with these and go from there.
Berger 105 VLD
Sierra 107MK
hornady 105 Amax

nonliberal,
If one of those bullets don't shoot, refer to what Preacher said!! I've shat all of them plus the 105 Lapua, and they all shoot better than I do!! It's all a matter of what your set-up likes best.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

Here are two different 600 yard benchrest targets shot in two different 6BR's of mine. Both groups are under an inch. Target 001 with the lower X score was shot using the Berger 105 VLD, in a Hart actioned 6BR, target 002 with the higher X score was shot using the new Berger 108 BT in my "Toxic" 6BR rifle. Both have Kreiger 8 twist .237 bore barrels.
I'd buy a box of each, some CCI 450's a jug of Varget and find out which one your barrel likes best.

How big is the x ring on those targets you have posted? Not being a benchrest shooter, I have no idea.

Robert Whitley

P.S. That box of 108's you spotted me on sure shot well at 600 yards out of a 6mmAR. First prone string a 200/11x and the next was a 199/11x. When I shot the 108's, I no longer felt that the 105 VLD was the one and only bullet. Thanks!

Robert,

They are standard NBRSA 600 yard Benchrest targets. The X ring measures 1.2, the ten ring measures 2.8, the blue nine ring measures 5.2. All measurements are outside to outside.
Group 001 measured .947 center to center score 50-1X target 002 group measures .979 center to center score 50-4X.

These are great targets to practice on or use for 600 yard load work-up since that white X ring gives you a real nice aiming point. Downside is that the blue area is real easy to lose sight of bullet holes in due to mirage. It can be almost impossible to see them, so you either assume your all in the blue or completely off the paper! LOL!

Those are some really nice groups.
I guess I will add the Berger BTs to the list I currently have and go from there.

You mention CCI450s and I see alot of people using them. I guess they seem to have an advantage over others? I bought a couple hundred of every kind they had at my local reloading store, including BR2s) but they dont carry 450s. Are they worth the search?

Thanks.

nonliberal, I am using the CCI 450 SRP in my 6 X 47 Shehane with great success. I don't see why they would not work in other smaller 6mm calibers. Just work up to your load if you already have one picked out. Bill

Great info guys!!

I have a pretty good supply of all the popular powders so that shouldnt be a problem.
I think with all the info from you guys and the rest of this site it will be pretty painless to get this 6br working like it should.
