6 PRC

I have a Browning X-Bolt target light in 6mm Creedmoor and I was wondering if I could have a gunsmith rechamber it into a 6mm PRC with its current barrel. Don’t really want to pull the barrel and get a new one, since this one only has 200-300 rounds on it. I know Saami case dimensions say 6.5 PRC is about .05” wider and about .15” longer at the beginning of the shoulder. Would it be possible to use a 6.5 PRC reamer set to do this? I know I will need a new bolt to accommodate the larger bolt face too.

Typically, anything based on the 6.5PRC is gonna be longer than a true short action.
Reamers are all made for X caliber. You need a "6MM PRC" reamer, JGS (as well as other tool makers) have a basic 6mm PRC design. Could you load it short? sure seems counter productive IMHO.

I guess I should’ve specified, I plan on using this for a coyote hunting gun so I will probably be sticking to shorter bullets anyway but I am not worried about single loading if I decide to load some longer target style bullets for the range.

No, you cannot use a 6.5prc reamer to cut a 6prc chamber. A reamer cuts the neck and throat too. So if you crammed a 6.5prc reamer down the hole it would have a neck, throat and freebore of a 6.5. You would need a 6mm prc reamer for it. I believe manson stocks them.

I would replace the barrel if youre paying for the work. Factory barrels are a crap shoot at best compared to aftermarket barrels. If youre paying a smith to rechamber a barrel already then you're better off starting with a new barrel.

Since this is for hunting and probably not going to run
a lot of rounds down it, go all in and have a 6 PRC imp. reamer
with the correct freebore also.
I'd also go with a new barrel for it.
Get one with the right twist for the bullet you want to use.
This would be a long range dogs nightmare.

I'd go with others here - get a new barrel. Here's what to expect from a straight 6 PRC and 109 hybrids without really stepping on it.

+1 on what Alex said. If you are looking for TAC driving accuracy, rechambering an existing barrel is not the way to go. Period. At least in my experience. What ranges are you anticipating shooting at Coyotes ? Your 6 Creedmoor may be ideal for what you are wanting to do. Tell us more about this adventure!

Unless you are the type that is absolutely fanatical about maximum point blank range, your 6 CM is just a couple more clicks on the dial.

No way I's waste the time, effort, or money to rechamber a factory barrel.

Don't get me wrong, Imma fan of the 6PRC & it's twin, the 6-284. I was one of the first to do the 6PRC, built a couple, ended up selling both & the reamer, and decided to stick to my 6x47 Lapuas.

The itch was scratched....again......

Are there better (more efficient) calibers yes.
But once you have a caliber in your head, you have to scratch that itch
until you shoot it. You will learn a lot of what works and what doesn't for next time.
OP you didn't say what the barrel twist is now?
Shoot the 6 creed and see how it works with lighter bullets for dogs.
It's a really good caliber for that purpose.
Then after shooting it, see if you need to go with a different caliber.
If you are shooting under 400 yds. there's a bunch of choices, even 22 cals.
I had a couple 22 creeds. One of those pesky itches. lol

After the advice on here and talking to Ryan at Huntslongrange I think I will hold off on the 6 PRC until I can justify a new barrel. For those that were asking about using the 6 creed on coyotes, I have a 6 creed AR that I use for my thermal coyote set up so I know cartridge works. This was more of a hypothetical/tinkering with a gun I don’t use much anymore.
