6.5 PRC vs 257 WBY Mag

If you're going to rebarrel, go ahead with the 257WBY and get a good 8 twist to let it shine with the 131's. I've yet to meet anyone shooting them that can't get great performance. The 257 out a a 26-28" barrel should be able to chuck those bullets out at least 3400fps, and no 6.5 is gonna keep up with that. I run those bullets around 3200 from my 25-06 and 7.5 twist barrel and it shoots flat and straight out to 3/4 mile all day.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Level the playing field a bit. Shoot the 131 Blackjacks. There probably in the mid .6 for BC numbers. No 6.5s will touch those ballistics in a 130 class bullet

Long time user and fan of the 257 Wby.
I must admit to being a bit of a traditionalist and like to load it like it was meant to be - light to medium bullets going fast! 100 grain bullets going out 3600 fps or more are like a laser. Out to 350 or so it’s just point and shoot. It doesn’t matter too much which bullet your rifle likes - the Sierras, Hornadys, Noslers, Barnes. Usually by the time I recover from recoil and regain the sight picture the animal is on the ground.
I’ve used the 115 ballistic tips and the 115 Bergers and killed two bucks this year with the 110 Accubonds but will probably go back to the 100s.
Unless I’m trying to scatter a varmint across the landscape and then it will probably be the 87 grain Sierras.
The 257 Weatherby was fast before it was cool to be fast.

Add another 257 WBY fan to the list.
I have hunted whitetail deer with cartridges ranging from 223 up to 300 RUM and everywhere in between. The 257 Wby has been the only cartridge that has held my attention. I shoot 110 grain accubond out of a 26” Pacnor 3 groove barrel @ 3380. This chamber has the Wby freebore length and I am jumping the heck out of my bullets. All that said, the load I have worked up shoots under 5/8” @ 200 yards. I have pushed this bullet faster but my accuracy suffered.
Even with the reduced speed this cartridge combination is like the hammer of Thor and produces little meat loss for me. Shots have ranged from 48.6 yards to 437 yards. 80% of the shots were bang flop!
Just my spin on a great cartridge.

I usually shoot 300 mags but bought the 257 just for fun. Standard Vanguard with the 26" barrel. Upgraded the trigger and now it shoots better than I can. multiple loads under an inch. 100 grain TTSX with 7828 110 grain accubonds with RL-25 and RL-22 and now working on a load with the 115 grain Ballistic Tips. Its fun to shoot. low on recoil and groups.

Simply put the .257 Wby is for killing stuff and the other aforementioned calibers are for playing games. :)
I have two of them and shoot 100 grain Noslers (both Partitions and Ballistic Tips), Without going out to the shop I recall my V1 at around 3500 or above with R25. It's an amazing hunting round. I shot one whitetail this season with it at 200 yards and the deer just seemed to bowl over and never moved. DRT.
Several years back I shot a nice buck at 300 some odd yards dead in the chest (Not my favorite shot but I was running out of legal time) and the deer spun around and simply fell dead. Another DRT. The 100 grain Partition coursed through the entire abdominal cavity making a terrible mess, entered a ham, broke the femur and I found it lodged under the hide at the rear of the leg. Had I not hit the bone I believe the bullet would have gone completely through the animal. I still have that bullet someplace (one of only a few I have ever recovered) and I need to weigh it and see how much weight it retained.

Old Roy took his .257 to Africa and caused all kinds of havoc with it. LOL..

Haven't seen anything that drops deer better than my 257 with nosler partitions.
Broadside double lung 280 yards just fell over exit hole the size of my fist.
Seen 338 mags 300 mags 7mm's with other bullets that do not kill deer as dramatically as the 257 with Partitions.

With a good barrel and a good chamber and strong brass the .257Wby can be impressive. This gun has a 29" Hart 12" twist (yes) barrel and Zero freebore. Brass is the very strong, and unfortunately long-discontinued PMC brass. Accuracy was notning great with ballistic tips but the Sierras were good. Notice how the groups tighten up around 4000 and a little over. The gun shoots very fast quite nicely and a 100gr bullet going that fast just demolishes a rockchuck, which is what it was built to do.
