6-PPC for hogs

What would you think of a rifle weighing 6.5 pounds chambered in 6MM-PPC shooting a 68 grain bullet for hog hunting~? Great weight for carrying all day, super accurate caliber, very accurate rifle with the abllity to hit the hog in the eye~!

Went hog hunting years ago with with about 4 fat guys and their fancy rifles. I carried a Winchester 9422M which I thought was adequate for what we were hunting. All I heard was jab after jab and wise crack after wise crack about my rifle and its inadequate cartridge. We were riding around in a pick -up when a hog appeared about 30-40 yards in front of us and just stopped. The scene at the truck was like the Keystone Cops. I guess the others were negotiating about who would shoot first while I leveled on the critter's eye and squeezed. Adios varmint~!! That day mine was the only hog we saw. Out one of the other guys later spotted a turkey and blew it to smithereens with his .30-06. Great White Hunter~!
I was an Accountant, and everybody knows that Accountants can't shoot so I rarely got hunting invitations. Or maybe it that that group knew I could shoot and were embarrassed by the fact that on that day I was the only one that scored~!

A poorly shot hog with a light bullet might be healthy enough to take out some of his anger management issues on the shooter. Properly placed...fine. We shoot them off our pastures regularly.
Your milage may vary. I have seen dogs injured by well shot hogs that died a few minutes later.

Good Hunting,

K

6 for Dogs…. 7 & up for Hogs
They just don’t go far or anywhere with a 338 200gr Hornady from my 338 Federal.
Always carry a stitch kit for the dogs & they all wear armour vests.

I was talking about a lite rifle in 6PPC that shoots like a bench-rest gun and placing the shot in or betreen th eyes~!

I think it's a great idea. Unless you use a scope capable of a wide field of view and know how to work the bolt really fast, you may have to be satisfied with the one shot one kill scenario.

Some around here have built 7.62 -39 rifles with .308 barrels, so it would be a hand load only type rifle. But I have always thought a super light AR15 in 7.62 -39 that would take advantage of the wealth of good light weight 30 caliber hunting bullets in the 120-130 weight range. would be an ideal hog rifle. I agree that a 6 PPC would be excellent if a good head shot was always present, but I've seen some of the thickest grissled up ribs and hide on a hog to think a good 30 caliber with a well-designed bullet that would penetrate and expand also is necessary for a body shot.

I shoot benchrest and have hunted my whole life. I have always made expert shots….NOT!
I don't know how many wild hogs you have shot, the ones I have refused my orders to stand still! LOL!

I've shot hogs with 6-BR 68gr Watson's.
Head shot? No issue.

This is a decent sized boar that got one just behind the eye on the opposite side. You can see the exit along the jaw line. Downward angle shot.
Bang flop.

It was a 105 Barnes match burner. Same result as the Watson.

I've only shot 3 in my limited number of hunts, 1 with a .S&W Model 14 revolver and two with rifles. The one with the revolver was running and took 3 thru the lungs to go down. The two with rifles were they standing still when I pulled the trigger and both went down immediately.

Nothing satisfies me more than the "one-shot, one kill" experience. Favorite rifle is an 1885 Winchester built for Winchester by Miroku in Japan. With a .38-55 which can reach 1000 yards and hit steel, the 1885 is a pretty effective hunting round.
