I have two Ruger #1s in 6mm Remington. One set up for 87 grn. Hornady and one set for the 105 Hornady. The 105 will shoot a seven inch group at a thousand yards. The 87 shoots three inches at four hundred yards. It is my favorite round.
My hunting buddy happened into a beautiful #1b in 6mmRem. Been messing with a few loads for it with 60gr Sierras, just to wring something out for vermin. They shot OK. Also have tried 80TTSXs and Berger 87HVLDs as potential deer schwackers (those 100gr SPs are just too butt ugly, LOL)
80TTSXs are jumping .065" @ 2.825" and they hold about an inch...nothing really inspiring. Tried e'm jumping .030" and they shot like hot garbage.
87HVLDs are jumped .050" @ ~2.850" OAL , and they're shooting ~3/4", seems decent for a factory rifle. Will look to 'tweak' these some more & maybe tighten things up a bit more. These would double as a decent medium range coyote/chuck bullet. It'd be nice to just build one 'do it all' load for my friend, as he's not much of a shooter & would do better acquainting with one load for that rifle...
Would you care to share your choice of powder for your 87s? I've tired Big Game and H4350, with about equal result? PM if you prefer, thank you!
Whiskey4,
This is a nice article about the 6mm Remington cartridge:

Like most of the other responders, I've gone through my share of Remingtons chambered for this cartridge. I've even gone so far as to build a couple of customs for long range target shooting. But the one that caught my interest the most was a Browning B78 single shot with an octagon barrel. Typical of Browning, the stock was high gloss and the barrel was the brightest, shiny blue, like a mirror. It would easily rival even a Weatherby. I guess we all have some magpie in us occasionally...
Anyway, I figured out a decent trade so I could own this rifle and hopefully get it to shoot with some accuracy. It actually shot O.K. for this style rifle (~1.250") but it was not up to what I figured it could be. So I did what any self-respecting rifle addict would do, I tore it apart so I could make some improvements. First I wrapped up the stocks carefully and put them away then I removed the barrel with equal care and put it away. I usually have a couple of nice 2-piece stock blanks laying around, so I was able to find some good looking wood to use for restocking. I desperately wanted to not have to use those idiotic Browning sight bases because they look like garbage. So I am working with my barrel maker to create a new tapered octagon barrel for the new sight bases I designed. He's supplying the steel and machines while I supply the labor. I'm probably a year down the road before I get close to the end of this project. Maybe.
With a 26" barrel and an 8" twist, I can shoot some respectable bullets at longer distances to harvest deer. I have also lengthened the forearm in order to balance the overall appearance of the rifle with this longer barrel. This is just an example of the style:

Good round, own 3, building another. The typical 243 powders work well in this case, 4350, 4831, rl22, 414, etc. Longer case neck than 243win. 1:10 twist was common for 6rem, 1:12 twist was common for the 244. If it's marked 6rem, most likely 1:10, which can get you into the 95 grain bullets.
