6 mm Rem... Thoughts ???

Just aquired a 6 Rem 700 Very liteweight..Would be a great carry weapon but i know nothing about this round. Have 8 boxes of 100 gr ammo with it...looking for info on pet loads...

I have two 6mm Remingtons. One is a Ruger M77 tang built in 1968 with a factory original Wilson Arms 24" heavy varmint barrel. Entire rifle is completely original OEM parts and is in near mint condition. Very nice for a 50 year old rifle ;) It is extremely accurate with 75gr Sierra HP varmint bullets, but cannot shoot heavy bullets due to a slow factory twist rate. The other one is also built on a Ruger M77 tang action from 1981, but is not original. It wears a new heavy Wilson varmint barrel i recently had installed, tho i havent shot the it yet because i am still working on a new AA fancy walnut stock for it. It was originally a 7mm Rem Mag that I turned into a 358 Norma Mag, then swapped for a standard bolt and turned it into a 6mm Rem.

The 6mm Rem is fast, inherently accurate, and deadly. It can be loaded down with 60-70gr bullets for ultra fast devastating varmint rounds, or heavy 100 to 115 gr bullets for hunting (provided barrel twist will allow)

Many of the factory rifles only twisted barrels for 1 in 11" and 1 in 9.5" in the 6mm Rem, both of which will not allow you to shoot bullets such as the 105gr Berger VLDs. If it's 1 in 11", you'll pretty much be limited to 87gr and lighter bullets.

I like my 6mm Remington's having heavy barrels to aid in maintaining accuracy when the barrel gets hot during rapid shooting sessions on gopher fields. A light barrel 6mm can still be accurate tho, just may need more frequent cooling if shooting rapidly on varmints. I'm sure you'll come to love the 6mm Rem as so many of us have. It really is a great round :)

I HAVE A 1980 REM 700 VARMINT SPECIAL 6MM AND I LOVE IT,ITS SO NICE I GET IT OUT AND WIPE IT DOWN AND JUST MARVEL OVER IT BUT IT SHOOTS LIGHTS OUT WITH VARGET AND 87GR VMAXS GREAT ROUND FOR SURE !!

I have two Ruger #1s in 6mm Remington. One set up for 87 grn. Hornady and one set for the 105 Hornady. The 105 will shoot a seven inch group at a thousand yards. The 87 shoots three inches at four hundred yards. It is my favorite round.

Good round, own 3, building another. The typical 243 powders work well in this case, 4350, 4831, rl22, 414, etc. Longer case neck than 243win. 1:10 twist was common for 6rem, 1:12 twist was common for the 244. If it's marked 6rem, most likely 1:10, which can get you into the 95 grain bullets.

Picked up a Remington BDL 6mm Remington in the 80's. 105's were great for whitetail and 87 grain bullets are perfect for varmints. Still one of my favorites.

I have one and love it (rem. model 600 ).. Extremely accurate and drops these S. Texas whitetail in a flash... Brass is a little hard to find.. Cabelas has winchester in stock right now.. As far as loads , you will just have to work one up for your rifle.. They have a large following for a reason.. One gun I would never sell.... Factory federal 100gr softpoints even shoot lights out in mine...

Put a new Leupold on mine a few months ago sighted it in made the last adjustment first hit bullseye secound round through the same hole... Done and back in the safe it goes..

Hard to find brass so hang onto those ones! Fine cartridge that got out-advertised by Winchester's 243. Makes a great deer or groundhog round. The 75 grain Sierra BTHP is really an old school bullet that destroys chucks. Any reasonable deer bullet that works in a 243 will be fine in the 6mm Rem.

My hunting buddy happened into a beautiful #1b in 6mmRem. Been messing with a few loads for it with 60gr Sierras, just to wring something out for vermin. They shot OK. Also have tried 80TTSXs and Berger 87HVLDs as potential deer schwackers (those 100gr SPs are just too butt ugly, LOL)

80TTSXs are jumping .065" @ 2.825" and they hold about an inch...nothing really inspiring. Tried e'm jumping .030" and they shot like hot garbage.

87HVLDs are jumped .050" @ ~2.850" OAL , and they're shooting ~3/4", seems decent for a factory rifle. Will look to 'tweak' these some more & maybe tighten things up a bit more. These would double as a decent medium range coyote/chuck bullet. It'd be nice to just build one 'do it all' load for my friend, as he's not much of a shooter & would do better acquainting with one load for that rifle...

Would you care to share your choice of powder for your 87s? I've tired Big Game and H4350, with about equal result? PM if you prefer, thank you!

80g TTSX with Superperformance is very, very fast and accurate at the top end of pressure curve, 3600+ depending on barrel length.

100g Hornady btsp are awesome in killing hogs and deer, and a hot load of IMR 4831 with a Rem 9 1/2 primer did well.

The 95g Partition jumping is unreal on large whitetails and cow elk. I had accurate loads with top end IMR 4350 and IMR 4831, check the Nosler manual #4 if you have one.

I had a Gentry muzzle break put on a model 7 to get it to shoot very accurately, and used Peltor Tac electronic ear muffs.

Whiskey4,

This is a nice article about the 6mm Remington cartridge:

Like most of the other responders, I've gone through my share of Remingtons chambered for this cartridge. I've even gone so far as to build a couple of customs for long range target shooting. But the one that caught my interest the most was a Browning B78 single shot with an octagon barrel. Typical of Browning, the stock was high gloss and the barrel was the brightest, shiny blue, like a mirror. It would easily rival even a Weatherby. I guess we all have some magpie in us occasionally...

Anyway, I figured out a decent trade so I could own this rifle and hopefully get it to shoot with some accuracy. It actually shot O.K. for this style rifle (~1.250") but it was not up to what I figured it could be. So I did what any self-respecting rifle addict would do, I tore it apart so I could make some improvements. First I wrapped up the stocks carefully and put them away then I removed the barrel with equal care and put it away. I usually have a couple of nice 2-piece stock blanks laying around, so I was able to find some good looking wood to use for restocking. I desperately wanted to not have to use those idiotic Browning sight bases because they look like garbage. So I am working with my barrel maker to create a new tapered octagon barrel for the new sight bases I designed. He's supplying the steel and machines while I supply the labor. I'm probably a year down the road before I get close to the end of this project. Maybe.

With a 26" barrel and an 8" twist, I can shoot some respectable bullets at longer distances to harvest deer. I have also lengthened the forearm in order to balance the overall appearance of the rifle with this longer barrel. This is just an example of the style:

I use Varget for the 87 grn bullets and Vit N 160 for the 105s. I just back the bullets a few thousandths off the lands.

Thanks for all the great replies.... Im thinking i want to try the 80 gr sierra and the 87 gr hornady. Any secret recipes out there for these ?? Oh,, and someone ask about my gun,, it is a heavy contour barrel. I believe it to be a 1-10 twist but it could be a 1-9. I have not dont the lookip on the serial # yet but will try to get to it this weekend...

Very Nice Kurz sounds like alot of work, But there is also alot of satisfaction in a project like yours...

I don't own one but wish I did. It's based on the 7x57 case so that and 257 Roberts brass can be formed into 6MM Remington. I have a buddy who has killed a truck load of whitetails with a 6MM in a Remington 721. You will love that rifle. Barlow

I love my 6mm Remington 700! 1:9 twist, fully OEM. I've taken Whitetail, Mulies, Feral hogs and many Elk with it. My load is 100gr Nosler Partition, 48gr. Reloader 23, Federal Gold Match 205M primer .071 off lands. Shoots 1/2 moa.

When Remington re-named the .244 to 6mm Remington, I'm pretty sure the twist was changed to 1 in 9". Mine is.

My 80's 700V ended up being a one load gun.Sierra 100g and IMR 4350.

Didn't get used near enough because of it.Have lighter,"somewhat" better Deer arsenal....and preferred, again lighter 243 that loves 85 g Sierras for walking Ghog weaponry. But that doesn't diminish the accuracy of that particular 6mm/100g setup.Just gravitated towards ultra lites through plain ole laziness.
