6 mm Rem... Thoughts ???

To follow up on my buddy's #1 6mmRem...

Wound up re-testing the 87 HVLDs, and they've proven out. They'll be a more capable 'all around' bullet, too. Just need to strap the Magneto V3 on there to get an MV, but they're doing plenty good on target for a factory killin' rifle...

Heck, it was harder to get the proper (offset) scope rings for that Ruger #1 and get a scope mounted up, proper! Whomever engineered the scope mounting system on that rifle needs their head examined o_O But alas, two offset rings yielded just enough rearward adjustment to allow full sight picture...

Good luck this season, 6mmRem shooters!

Ruger m77 std. barrel6mm 4350.jpg ... Not a hot load, but works well and very consistent (more than me!)...
44.5 IMR 4350/Fed 210/ Nosler 70gr BT/Win cases... 3180 fps. 100yds.. Cabelas may still have shells...

I have an "A" prefix SN Rem 700 Varmint Special in 6mmRem, 1-9" Twist, The action has been bedded, floated barrel and 1.5lb trigger. It will shoot in the .2s all day with 95gr Sierra Matchkings.

whiskey4 congrats on the 6mm Remington. It is an awesome factory cartridge. You need to be careful on that lightweight barrel. It is a very hot round and will burn up a throat quickly if gotten too hot. Right now is a good time to stock up on brass, it was hard to find for several years. The factory 100 grain is good deer rounds but you will want something smaller for varminting. The 55 grain Ballistic Tips will just destroy a coyote.

Cabela's do indeed have Winchester brass in stock, 50-ct for a little over $0.50 per case, for 6mm Rem. The other outlets I checked (Midway, MidSouth, Graf's) were all out of stock. (FWIW Hornady brand 6mm Rem brass does seem plentiful right now, but more expensive at ~$0.78 each.)

Whatever you do, don't try CFE 223 in 6mm Rem. I called Hodgdon asking why they listed CFE 223 for 243 Win but not 6mm Rem. (Plus they list it for 243 WSSM which is the ballistic twin of 6mm Rem.) They told me "Don't even try it in 6mm Rem! It's far too unstable." They also said that CFE is somewhat quirky and unpredictable, so only use Hodgdon's published data.

My now-deceased shooting buddy had a B-78 in 22-250. Twenty five years ago, it was the first varmint rifle I ever shot, on my first ground squirrel hunt in Nevada. He had moved into the neighborhood, and finding I was interested in guns and hunting, invited me to go out after them. Driving around in the desert, he hands me the binocs and says "There's one on yonder rock pile." It was about 250 yards away and looked small even through the 10-powers. "Really? You shoot 'em that far?"

We piled out and he set me up across the hood of his Trooper with a bunny-ear bag under the fore stock. Using my fist under the heel, he told me to put the 12x Leupold's fine crosshair on its head and squeeze it off. Nailed it, cartwheeling high. I was somewhat astounded, and hooked. I soon went out and bought a new 700 VS in 223 Rem, and got a Rockchucker Master Reloading kit.

When he passed away a couple of years ago that B-78 wound up with his nephew, but I doubt he'll cherish it as I would have if it were mine. It wasn't the most accurate gun my buddy owned, but it was a fine piece of craftsmanship.

Yes, Re-16 will work quite well in the 6mm Remington using your 87 grain VMAX bullets. You might realize a little more velocity from the Re-16 than H4350 and the Re-16 is more temperature stable.

I just finished testing a 6mm Rem. with Re-16 and the Barnes 80 gr. TTSX bullets for a young man going on a deer hunt in the southeastern US. Excellent results for moderate range deer hunting.

Regards.

Hi all:

The 6mm Remington is a favorite of mine, my brother and I chambered our first barrels for the cartridge for LR woodchuck hunting, and I carried it over into competitive LR prone.

I use longer barrels, mainly for a little more sight radius, but they provide a little more velocity too (all I use now are 34" FYI). All are 8 twist, and thru the years I have shot a bunch of Berger 105 hybrids and target VLD's, and some Sierra 107's too.

I always start testing with 45.0 grains of VV N160 and bullets seated .020" off the lands. This is a pretty mild starting point (in my barrels - please insert disclaimer here!) velocities are around 3140fps. Barrels are all Kriegers and Benchmarks. H4350 is also good, 44.5 grains IMHO is max - at about the same velocities. The N160 is a little slower, and 3200fps is not hard to obtain without being too hard on the brass. I am using Federal 210m's FYI.

I hope this helps, I was so glad to see this thread - I thought I was the only dinosaur messing around with it!
