6 mm on the 30-06 improved

You can push Berger 105's past 3,400 with Reloder 26 in a straight .243 Win, there are threads on here, Long Range hunting, and Snipers hide

mr. big, please explain yourself.

I worked a pretty accurate load with RL 26 and the 105 VLD H from a 28 inch 8 twist Krieger on a Tac 30 action at 3400 fps,,it shot great 3 and 5 shot groups,,I shot a 20 shot string at 1,000 yards to see how it would hold up and at shot 12-13 the bolt was getting very hard and shot 15 and 16 both had the primer come out of the case on extraction,,I assumed that the heat from the chamber was causing the problem and backed down to 3200 fps and didnt have any problems but was not as accurate as the 41.5 gr H4350 load at 3200 fps so I just shoot that,,

you might be OK with the fast node and RL26 in a hunting rifle or something that only requires a couple shots but it was not for me in sustained shooting with a hot rifle,,it may work fine in your rifle but a 105 at 3400 is a hot load from a 243 I dont care what powder you are using ,,

Thanks for your response. Hot bbls, hot chambers and hot days can lead to the problems you mention, even w/ moderate loads.

Mr. Big, thanks for your input. That is something I was wondering about but I don't run loads that I consider to be pushing the envelope thru a string like that. This one is for hunting. I run it up to where I get pressure signs then back down below that and search for accuracy.
Thanks again, good to know.

sound like a winner with a 1-8 twist 26" long...I had a 240WM I was playing with and I worked a safe load with a 95gr classic Hunter just right at 3,400 FPS 24" barrel, it shot well...I hit some 600 yards targets with it..Just wish it had a 1-8 instead of the factory 1-10 and 26" long..So I parted with it..I have two 6XC's a 1-8 and a 1-7 to shoot the buller's I like to shoot. Man I like'd that 240 case and it was accurate in a factory rifle..I know a guy who built a custom with a 1-8 and it shoots incredible . But I was not going to spend the money to rebarrel it so I let it go...My next barrel will be a 6.5 creedmoore...But yea 6mm/06 AI should be great...I knew a guy who had a 6.5/06AI on a 700 short action, I know weird..But anyway he used to shoot 100 yard groups with us for fun against 6PPC's and 6BR's he did well...I also seen it shoot the old sierra 155's into 4.5" groups at 1,000 yards. SO 06AI improved anything is good.

maddysdad,

Unless you have a spare long action sitting around or a larger amount of .25-06 brass to neck down, I would consider a couple of other alternatives.

For long actions I would suggest a .240 Weatherby Magnum since it is nearly a match to the 6mm-06 Improved. I use this cartridge when I hunt Coues deer in the Southwest. It can be both accurate and easy to work up loads for with the complete range of bullet weights. Just be sure to match the twist to the longest bullets you might want to use.

I have also worked with the 6mm-284 for quite some time. It too can be exactly what you want with the full range of bullet weights. It does not, as some suggest, have to be a barrel burner. Powder selection will play an important role in both performance as well as barrel life.

Then you might consider the next step up with the 6mm RSAUM which can be made from the now available 6.5 GAP 4-S brass (6.5 RSAUM). Using the H-1000 recipes, again the barrel burner status is put way off to the background. This cartridge is particularly suited to the heaviest of bullets but will accommodate the best constructed solids like the Barnes 85 grain TSX-BT at some very high velocities.

Regards.

According to Huntingtons, the 243 Super Rock Chucker is a 30-06 (25-06) necked down to 243. It has also been labeled the .240 Super Varminter by Ackley.

Be careful about shoulder angles when discussing some of these older cartridges.

Regards.

I like the info you posted. And am curios did you try a 3350 or 3300 node? I have been trying to find some rl26 for my 243ai but cant find it anywhere. Hopefully it will be available again soon.

in my bbl the accuracy with RL 26 was at 3200ish and 3400ish and at 3200 my H4350 load shoots better and I know how it shoots well enough that I decided to just run with that and havent done any more tests with any other powders,,

IMO the straight 243 Win is very underrated caliber,,the 105-115 class bullets at 3200 fps is a pretty stout load that shoots very well in the conditions I encounter most,,

Is this about the same as the 6TTH? 6mm Texas Trophy Hunter from a Texas writer...
There is a .224 TTH from a Texas writer built on the 6mm Rem. case. I checked The PTG website and didn't see a reference for the 6mm version but that may not be the final answer. There are several versions of the 6mm Rem. with various shoulder angles and improvements in the body taper. GAP has one named the 6mm Crusader which has a 32 degree shoulder and an improved body taper yielding about 61.0 grains of water capacity. There is no change in the neck length.

Regards.

Correct. The 224 TTH was designed by Ralph Lermayer a long-time freelance writer. It is throated for long bullets, and this is what differentiates it from the standard 22/6mm.

Thanks again for the info. I am real curios as to what kind of results I can get with my 243ai and rl26.

A friend of mine just re-barreled his .243 Catbird (6-270 Imp 35°) with a 1:12 twist
Worked a load up with 72gr Barnes varminators, runnin' ~3940 fps....YIKES! He shot a couple coyotes with it last week, and said it was flat out NASTY...

His old barrel was a 1:14, and would clear 4K easily with a 70gr B-tip. 3750+ with an 85gr Sierra. I suspect a 6-06AI would be very close in performance to the Catbird?
