6 Dasher hunting gun.

Been searching on here and haven’t quite found the answer I’m looking for. I’m strictly a hunter and dont shoot competitions. I’m thinking about building a 22-24” barrel 6 Dasher. With a 100-105 class bullet can I expect to get close to or reach 3000 fps? Or is this being to optimistic? I would like a low recoil 500 yd whitetail gun. Or should I just build a 6 Creed or 6x47? Already have two 6.5x47’s.

Do a 6x47L or a Creedmoor. I’d do a 6x47L since your already setup for the 6.5x47L. You will hit your velocity mark easily and no fireforming. You will not notice an accuracy difference in a hunting gun between any of them. Plus it will feed flawlessly from a BDL style floorplate.

Makes sense. Guess I was intrigued by the 32 or so grains of powder used in the Dasher. Figured if I could get close to 3000 fps with almost 10 gr less powder it may be worth it. Thought it may be like my 300 Win Mag compared to my 300 Rum. Similar velocities with WAY less powder. Which equals less recoil, which would be nice.

I don't think you're ever going to get to 3000fps with a 105 in a 22-24". I'm just shy of 3000 with a 30" and 2750 with 15" barrels

I built a Dasher varmint rifle on a Sako 85, was very accurate. The only downside for me, and the reason I pulled it apart, was it wouldn't feed. Currently looking at Bordon's new super short 6 action in hopes to build a functional magazine fed dasher, but not a fan of box magazines. The moment someone can make one feed with an internal box and Orbendorf bottom metal, I'm there!

I have four 6X47 L rifles....Three are sporters and one is a heavy varminter. Have killed lots of deer with that cartridge. Very pleasant to shoot, very low recoil and very accurate. I have used the 87 Gr Berger VLD at around 3180 fps, and the 95 Gr Berger VLD around 3125 fps...Both are deadly...You can use the 105 Gr Bullets if you feel the need but the 95 VLD is just as deadly (IMHO) and shoots very flat . All are out of 22" barrels. Not trying to change your mind, just giving you some food for thought. Good luck...

6mm is a great choice because all the available bullets in this caliber. 6mmBR has always been one of my favor varmint cartridge, it's deadly accurate up to 250 yds, specially now the Lapua brass, it's never been better.
But I find to shoot well beyond that, typically you need a heavier bullet with a higher BC & shooting at higher velocity to get flat trajectory.
Why are you back to the square one, this may be your destiny, I wish the 6mmx47 Lapua came along 30 years ago.

If you want those numbers from a 22" tube and easy to load for you would be best served by the 6 Creedmoor. Besides, if you desire, there is (or soon will be) factory loaded ammo.

In the past, I've built three 6 Dashers with 22" barrels for coyote hunting. No problems feeding with regular BDL floorplates. 1st ran 95 VLD's at 3060, next two ran 105 VLD's at 2940, which was the accuracy load in both. I would expect a 24" to come close to 3000.

Ended up selling them to build my ultimate coyote smacker on a Bat action. I went to the 6x47 Lapua because the Bat VR wouldn't handle anything on the BR case, otherwise I was planning on another Dasher. Current accuracy load in that gun is the 105 Bergers at 3030.

I also built a 6x47 WI Whitetail Gun,,,A 26" Kreiger,,8tw,,on a Savage 12 action and a VLP stock, which is a DBM and they feed flawlessly. I can shoot any hunting bullet from this barrel,,,87gr-115. I really like the 100 gr SGK,,no recoil, flat shooting, good bullet performance, great accuracy. I tried other hunting loads also, they all shot really nice, hard to pick which one to use. My loads came from recommendations from shooters on these helpful forums. I didn't even have to alter any of them. It shoots well enough for a 600 yd match with hunting bullets.

Those are great numbers. If I can hit 2800 fps with a 105 gr out of a 22” barrel I’ll build a dasher. Lots of good info here and thanks for all the reply’s. I’m leaning towards the dasher as it will fill a void. I got a few 6.5’s, 7mm, 30 cal, 25 cal. Basically wanting a low recoil whitetail gun for 500 yd max shots. I have lots of other guns for longer shots. Keep the info coming I’m open to ideas. My barrel is shipping so I need to decide soon.

Beeman,

I have a buddy that built a 6 Dasher on an HS Precision stock. He also used their center feed internal magazine set up. Fed flawlessly for him and it was strictly for hunting. Hope this is of some help with your project. Good luck.:D:D

That should be easy. I would expect to get into the 2900+ range. RL16 tends to give a fair amount more speed with excellent accuracy. Depending on what action you use you will more than likely have to have the bolt bushed and the firing pin turned to .060” to get the most out of it. But it’s well worth it.

The round I'm showing you is the 6mmx47, it's the 6.5x47 necked down to 6mm, like in the picture, it's the one standing all the way to the right.
I used to salmon fish right below the dam, done it for over 20years, there is a "Citrus Height" near by, not sure it's the same place. Anyway, back then it was a nice country, I'm sure it still is.
