6 BRA 12 twist testing (update 3-4-18)

Well, what can I say . .. this gun is for skill building at reloading and shooting bench. It felt pretty locked down in the front and rear. There was a mph cross wind. I just need to be honest and realize the gun is probably better than my skill level. Sigh . . .thx BB

Please understand. Not being critical at all. I am learning too. Pay close attention on every shot. Before you look at the target you should know whether you did something wrong as it relates to handling the gun. If you executed right, and the shot is out, then you know it was something else-the wind (flags a must), the load, Gremlins.

I'm working on keeping my head down and in the shot. But amazing my 4 fast sighter shots were .257" Less thinking more shooting might be the key. Sure wish I had a pro near me to evaluate my setup and shooting. Also would be nice to shoot a proven gun/load to see if my technique is any good. I really have no foundation to base any of my results. Cheers BB

I got out this morning and shot my 12 Twist BRA at 100 yards before the wind got too bad. I haven’t shot this load with Bart’s 80s and 8208 since last September in warmer temps, so I loaded 3 charge weights with 5 shots each. I shot out my aim point on the first shot of the first group which always makes it tough to hold a group. I let it cool between each group and the wind had started to pick up on the last. I did move the scope up 4 clicks between each group.

Back from the range this morning. Wind was 0-5mph. tried to shoot in the lulls. Some better groups when I slowed down to the mid 2900s. Got blown off the range around 11:00am as the wind was building. I'm shooting touching the lands. I also found that my action was riding up on a part of my trigger so corrected that major oversight so the action was sitting proper in the bedding. Weather is going south for a few days so won't be able to get out and shoot til early next week. Cheers! BB

Just a heads up but any of my rifles have never shot well “Touching the Lands”. I need to be either in the lands .004+ or off the lands. I was shooting a 223 tonight at 200 yds doing a very rough seating depth test with Berger 75vld’s. .002 off, .010 off and .040 off. The winner by a landslide was the .040 off.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm just using touching as a starting point. I agree. My 6x47 consistently shoots 105s at .012" off. However it does shoot really well touching. Hopefully I'll get to test the seating depth here once the weather breaks in Colorado. BB

Updated Range Reports. Went to the range on the 18th. Looking for a node from 29g to around 30.6g (30.2 and 30.4 are on a target from a previous day). Really liked what I saw from 29.90 to 30.40 of IMR8208. I think it is a great example of looking at vertical flattening and not worrying so much about the horizontal. Pumping the data into my home grown spreadsheets demonstrated speeds leveled off, ES reduction, and groups tightened. So I split the difference and loaded up 15 rounds at 30.14g and headed back to the range. met up with a few local proven shooters and let them shoot the gun. Second target shows some very promising 5 shot groups. Mine was three shots (top right). First two punched nicely while the third shot got blown off to the left.

Next up a seating depth test at 30.14g.

CheersBB

James, I have been shooting the Bart’s 80 grn BT in a 1-12 for a couple of years, both in a standard .060 throat BR and my .050 throat 6PPC.

I found that in the BR, Accurate 2495 works great. I shoot 33.5 grns with a Fed 205 at a tad under 3300 FPS. SD is under 5 in a 10 shot string. At 600 yards, it is shooting about the same as yours.

I put this combo together to give it a try in 200 and 300 yard Varmint for Score.

In the 6PPC, I shoot 27.5 grns of 133. It has sub .200 capability.
