6 BRA 100y testing

I definitely will! Thank you for the advice. I must have a pretty slow lot of H4895 or it's just degraded some over the last 20 years. I want to say this can of H4895 cane from an auction, it was sealed, but you never know how it was stored. My reloading room is in the house which is at 68-70 degrees year round. Still smelled and looked ok though when I cracked it open last year for a few test rounds out of my 223. But definitely seems to be slow because I'm not seeing anyone else using 31.8g of H4895 with a 108g bullet and still only getting 2950fps.
we use to dry 7828 to get more velocity and it worked well, that's been mid 80's I done forgot what all we done but everything worked..shooting 1000yds..dry by weight then my brother had a formula he used I have no clue about it I just shot

Others have already questioned if the scope is to blame. I mention it also, only because I spun my wheels for a lengthy time, trying to get one 6Creedmoor to shoot. 100yd groups were 1/2-3/4”. In the end I tried a scope from another rifle and the first group was one slightly enlarged hole. It was a Golden Eagle. The mfg checked it out and found nothing wrong. That scope was later replaced with a new one. But I have not tried it yet.

Are you running .001 tension by chance? I’ve seen the tolerance stack cause a lot of trouble doing that. You end up with half a thou or less and they don’t act right.

I’m not leaving mad by any means… just kinda out of suggestions. If a BR variant likes a powder and bullet (and it’s rare they don’t) everything shoots .2s or better with a good scope/reliable ignition. You’re just going to have to figure out which part isn’t clicking.

I am running 4 thou neck tension at the moment as a few guys have said that H4895 likes a little more neck tension. I have 2 other bushings that will give me 3 and 5 thou to mess with later.

I think it's just more due to being course load development so far. I'll get there, just need a little more time and patience to work it all out. I wish it was shooting in .2s with little to no load development, however this one just isn't.

Could be this old lot of H4895, could be the bullet, could be the seating depth, could be the tension, could be the scope, etc. Could be any number of things really. Going to get a new jug of H4895, going to try some Barts 103g Daggers with the new jug of H4895, got a new scope put on.

Think I'm just gonna work around the 30-30.5g area at 2800-2850fps with the remainder of this can of H4895. Then do a seating depth test and come back off the lands more. Should tighten things up hopefully, then I can play with some neck tension.

Looks to be maybe .08" pin? Bush and drop to .062 and should help the createring.

It comes with a .068" pin. I doubt a .062" would make much difference.

I'm not going to pursue the 2950fps node. Just a little to warm for my liking, especially when it gets to be summer and doing 10-12 shot strings, I doubt it will hold up without giving me issues.

Tried 25 off the lands yesterday and it was down right horrible. I'm gonna go back closer to the lands tomorrow, try 5 off, then touching and see if it's any better than the 10 off I have been doing.

Fireforming load put 10 in a dime at 10 in, but I don't really think I want to be 10 in for a match/coyote rifle either. Hoping 5 off or touch will be good enough.

I also scrubbed the barrel this morning with a bronze brush foam bore cleaner, got a ton of copper out of it. Who knows the last time this thing had been cleaned...

Do you have any other bullets on hand?

I don't have a BRA. Mine is a 6BR with 8 twist 26" barrel. It can be picky with bullets.

It likes 90ELD's and 103ELD's are ok but not great. It hates the 108ELD's. These days I shoot the 105Berger VLD's and yes, they do better with a light jam. They easily chamber and will extract without pulling the bullet. If you don't mind spending the money then try the Vapor Trail as well :) Others have had really good luck with the 105 Hybrids and I will probably try them one of these days.

I also load for the lower node, around 2750fps. It is far less sensitive to charge variation. I've had good luck with Varget, N150 and N540. Have not tried 4895.

Finally getting somewhere now! Spent a few hours scrubbing the barrel and cleaning the brake yesterday morning, gobs of copper just pouring out of the thing after brushing it...I also changed from shooting off a BR front rest/protektor rear bag to a bipod/Armageddon rear bag. Winds were 5-10 mph this afternoon and 45 degree Temps. I went with the 30.3g charge around 2830fps that I've shot a few times now with decent results, but nothing stellar. I loaded up 6 rounds at 10 off which has been my baseline so far throughout most of my testing. I used 3 of those for foulers since I scrubbed the heck out of the barrel, I also loaded up 3 at 5 off, and 3 at touch.

I think I finally have something here to work with the 108 ELDMs. Next up will be 12 rounds loaded at 5 off and see what it does for a group and ES/SD. Hopefully it will stay around a dime and if so, I'll be done with testing on the ELDMs. Then I'll start stretching it out from 300-1K and see how it holds up. As it is, I'll take the .3" at 100 yards off a bipod in 5-10 mph winds with ELDMs. Plus the POI on the 5 and 10 off were the same. Those 6 shots would all be a ragged hole if you were to overlap them.

Saturday got a play a sling position, burrrr cold 20F with a second time fired case and no mandrel, using some old open tip SMK107s for fire forming after I got right with the rifle. It seemed to like the same seating die setting as I have test rounds for the Closed Nose 107 for this new barrel. I ended up cutting the session shorter.
Believe I just put a .268 bushing in the Wilson die.
For no load/jump testing and a mixed batch of H4895 (-.2 gr from my prior barrel. Ran good. Bolt lift was good. Speeds not really worrying until it gets a 100 or so rounds on it but 2847 fps

8 shots on the MR31 100 yd prone scaled for 600 target. Giving me hope the Old Model 70 has new life.

Scott,
Sling with irons , eyes watering, and a frozen trigger finger! Good shooting.
