6.5x47L sporter

I'm looking to build a light weight sporter and had pretty much decided on a 250 Savage, but i'm more than a little intrigued with 6.5x47L. Anyone had any experience?

The 250 will do anything the 6.5 will do on any given day.....
A little more boiler room in the 250 over the 6.5....
I have both and would be hard pressed to choose one over the other..
A 100 grain Ballistic tip in the 250 (mines a Ackley) will flat out shoot, and deer don't like it....

Lapua shoots extremely well. Just made up some of the 6.5 guys loads for the 123gr I ended up using amax they use the scenars. But my amaxs shoot almost one hole for 3 rounds and I was doing about 2.5 to 3 inch groups at 500 yards last week with it that was like 5 or 6 rounds I had with it at 500 when I was working with the G7 rangefinder. But the Lapua is easy to work with and mild recoil. It performs very well at extended ranges. It was like number 6 or 7 best sniper round voted a couple years back on future weapons show.

More bullet options for 6.5. I know the 6.5x47 shoots great too.

Either one would make a good low recoil hunting round. I would compare brass, bullet and die availability. That should help you decide.

I used to be nuts for big game hunting. The past ten years or so my enthusiasm to be uncomfortable, cold, wet, then have to deal with packing out an elk or deer...isn't as appealing anymore.

Anyway.....I built a 6.5x47 Lapua as well as a 6 x 47 L these last two years. BOTH impress me as great deer or antelope cartridges. With quality 140's I'd even use the 6.5 x 47 on elk. either one is flat enough, mild recoil, etc.

BUT.....If I was going to build myself a light weight deer/antelope gun You and I are on the same page.... I'd go .250 Savage or the AI in a heartbeat. ALL a guy needs.

I did a .280 Rem 20 years back when I hunted a lot and was Guiding occasionally for elk on a local Ranch. Twenty four inch #2 barrel, fluted, kevlar pounder stock, etc. Seven pounds and a few ounces with a 2.5-8X Leupold, 3 rds of ammo and a sling. What a JOY to carry. I do feel that especially as we get older, a Lt Wt rifle really makes some sense.

6.5x47 shooting 123 Scenars is one of my most accurate rifles.

It won't shoot anything worth a ---- in the 130 + Range

In fact, it's a hard decision weather to take my BRX, Dasher, or the 6.5x47 when I shoot.

I have built two light weight 6.5x47 Lapuas for deer hunting. I built them for my boys so they would have a mild recoiling rifle. The last one I built was with a Savage Lady Hunter stock ( beautiful walnut stock), and is very light. I have not weighed the rig yet since I have a bigger scope on it for load developement, but I think it will go around 6 1/2 pounds when scoped with a 3-9x40.
I could shoot it all day without getting a sore shoulder. I went with the Lapua because I already had dies.
The only advantage I see with your question, would be that the 6.5 has a much better bullet selection, as mentioned already.

I have a Rem M7 with a Pacnor pencil barrel. Very light and handy rifle, very accurate. If I did it over, I'd add a bit more weight to the barrel.

The M7 action seems to beg for the 6.5x47.....

ETA Mine's an 8 twist, shooting the Berger 140 VLDs over Varget

I have a Creedmoor and originally wanted a 6.5x47 L. However the rifle that I wanted was not available in the Lapua. I have been considering rebarreling a couple different rifles to the 6.5x47 L.

One factor that I would like some experienced shooter/smith to weigh in on is the firing pin/hole diameter. I have conflicting opinions on whether bushing for a small diameter firing pin is a necessity. I really don't want to bush either rifle that I am considering for the Lapua.

I have a 6.5x47L built on a Borden Alpine action, Bartlein #2 contour 8.5 twist barrel at 22" in a McMillan hunter's edge stock. It was built by Jon Beanland. It's nice and light and shoots lights out. I built it with the Barnes 100 TTSX in mind and I run them at 3100 fps. It's a deer hammering machine.
