6.5x47L Info Page?

Does anybody have any recipes for 142 Sierra Matchkings and Varget. Especially starting charge weights. Currently I am using H4350 and getting 2725 fps. I was hoping to about 75 fps more with Varget.

I NEED SOME ADVICE ON THE 6.5X47 LAPUA. I AM FROM SOUTH-AFRICA AND HAVE ONLY SOMCHEM POWDERS TO WORK WITH. I READ WITH INTREST ALL YOUR POSTS ABOUT LOADS AND SPEEDS YOU GET WITH THE 47 LAPUA.
I WOULD REALY LIKE TO USE THE 139 SCENAR ,WITH THAT BULLET WEIGHT I CAN PRACTICE PAPER SHOOTING AS WELL AS HUNT WITH IT, I THINK 139GR WILL GIVE MORE THAN ENOUGH PENETRATION. BUT IN THE SAME BREATH I THINK THE 123GR SIERRA OR LAPUA MIGHT GIVE BETTER TRAJECTORY.IF I WOULD SHOOT BOTH GRAIN BULLETS WHAT DIMENTION REAMER DO I NEED. WHAT TIPE OF BARREL WOULD YOU USE, I HEARD THE PACK-NOR BARRALS IS THIGHT, AND WOULD WORK BETTER WITH LAPUA BULLETS, IS THER ANY PROOF IN THAT. HOW LONG SHOULD BARREL BE FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE. ANY OTHER TIPS REGARDING THIS CARTRIGE WOULD BE APRECIATED.
I REALY DONT WANT TO MESS-UP THIS PROJECT.

THANK YOU

PS. SORRY IF THERE IS ANY GRAMMAR OR SPELLING MISTAKES.I AM AFRIKAANS SPEAKING

Ben Brand,

Welcome to the Forum and dont worry about grammer, we can figure it out. But you need to quit using all CAPS. In "Email & Texting" language, that portrays SHOUTING.... :D

Were you able to find the info you were looking for? Hows the project coming along?

Keep us posted.

Rod in Fargo...

I tried vv n550 yesterday 4/16 and was very impressed..140 amax ci 450 2.730 .010 jump looks like 39.o &40.5 shot very well under .5 mainly driver error,(all-ways had 1 out) 41.o had slight bolt lift... also 41.5 of RL17 works well ,will be a good back-up if I can,t find vv n550 ~Danny

Hope to be testing soon
140berger vld
OAL 2.800
Wolf SRM
41, 41.3 and 41.5 charges to be tested
30" Broughton 5C

been on hold pending new rear bag (mini Gator and heavy sand)
bullets will be colored via sharpie n shot into single target via JB's method
will post once i get time to test, kinda got back into clays
Works out good as i prefer to do load work in heat of TX summer to validate any temp issues

As i have 4 8lb jugs of RE17 n 1k of 140vlds just gotta find combo that works, i do have some 140AMAX i might test but focus is on 140 berger vld

32lbs of hi- energy powder, lemme see (pulls out calculator..), that's approx 5300 loads so a good two barrels worth with that combo. That'll keep you busy for a while :D

your in the right area at 41+ with the 140 Bergers they ran 2968 for a ten shot average @.3 group. The 130 JLK's worked very well at the same load at 2950 and shot around .2. RL-17 works very good in the 6.5 x 47.......jim

I agree. In my gun, with 130VLDs it works especially well with a large (0.050") jump. Out of a 22" barrel, I get ~80fps more than my most accurate load of H4350 and about the same accuracy.

Any idea where I can pick up 200 pieces of brass? Everyone seems to be out of stock

Please contact me if you have any you are willing to sell

Here is where I found it to be the cheapest.

I have been using 38.8 Varget with 139 Secnars.
They are running 2950.

Looking for any data on R-17 with 130 JLK's and/or 130 Bergers. Just completed rifle. It works well in 6XC and I have a several lbs.

I got good results with 41.5gr and a lot of jump (0.050"). See this thread on this board. I think the jump is the key; RL-17 didn't work very well with jam or a small jump.

RL-17 had excellent velocity with the 130gr bullets for me, but the accuracy was quite poor. In my experience with 130-140gr. bullets, RL-15 and Varget give similar velocity with RL-15 providing slightly better accuracy.

Thanks for the information I tried some R-15@ 37.0 this past weekend and each group got better in new barrel, I know R-15 will get it done. I'll try some of the R-17 with the jump and see if it will work too.

***Work up to this load***
40.8 gr. N550 hammers with 130 grain Bergers in 6.5x47 Lapua.

Tried some RL15 loads last night. 130gr. Bergers, 205m Primers. 37.8-38.6gr. RL15. Groups a 200 yards ran from .9 to .4, Many ES were under 10.
Shot these jammed. Will try different seating depths tonight.

Has anybody used Vihtavuori powder with the hornady 123 gr amax? If so what was the velocity and how was the accuracy? I have a barnard with a 27" barrel. I just ordered allot of those and am hoping to find a good load for them... I think the N550 would be my first pick.

More or less to bring this thread to the top, I'll post initial data from my new 6.5x47 build:

6.5x47
Varget
37.8-38.2grns
123SMK
.030" jump
CCI BR4
~2980-3020fps
29" Brux barrel, 8.5 twist
Stiller Predator V action

I fired a handful of 3 shot groups @ 100 trying RL15 vs. Varget, 450's vs. BR4's, it kept preferring the Varget/BR4 combo. (better groups, speeds, ES/SD) Then I moved out to 800yds with 38.0grns Varget. Seemed to group pretty well out there. I ran a ladder test which showed a clear node @ 37.8/38.0/38.2. Essentially zero vertical dispersion. I need to repeat that ladder a few more times. I have shot only the 123SMK at this point, I have some 120SMK, and Hornady 120/140 to try at some point.
