6.5x47

Picking up the start of a new project. Planning on rebarreling to 6.5x47 when I get some numbers figured out. My biggest question is what barrel length is best suited to that round to push 129-143gr bullets?

6.5 Creed isn't out of question as well. What barrel length to optimize that round?

You wont regret a 47l. The accuracy is better then the creedmoor.

So i would recomend a 26-28in barrel. 28 will garenty you can reach the best node that is somewhere in the 2850fps area.

Bolt or Semi?
External ballistics are identical, but 47L is more efficient because it runs at higher pressure (63K vs 55K). 47L gives same velocity with about 10% less powder (and a slightly longer neck), but you can't take advantage of that higher pressure in a semi-auto.
Short answer, bolt-x47L, semi-Creedmoor. Another advantage to the Creedmoor in semi is 140gr seat perfectly at mag length, while the x47L will leave about .2in gap allowing rounds to shift forward under recoil.
RL17 will impress with either, but don't give up on it too soon. It starts out loose, but groups shrink dramatically as you approach max loads. Pressure increase is very gradual at peak pressures so you don't need to be shy.
2800fps is common with 140gr in 26in bbl. and 2850 possible with very long Lapua brass life.

Recon I am having Josh at pva build a 6.5x47 off of the tl3 action with a 28" barrel and .175 free bore this will be my new prs rifle and if I want to dabble in shooting some 1000yd f/class I could run the 140s.I have a surgeon 591 6.5 creedmoore and had a Stiller tac30aw in 6.5x47 that I just sold.I shoot both caliber a lot and perfer the 47.

I got interested in the 6.5 x 47 several years ago from a television show could not give up on it till I got one built. It was based off of Howa 308. I sent the barrel action PAC Nor, they did a traffic job trueing in the action and chamber a 26” super match grade barrel. It was shooting less than 1/2 minutes of angle, out to 1000yrds. My favorite load is 40 grns of RL17 on a Berger 140grn Elite Hunter. Using a CCI 450 primer. This combo gets me 2840 FPS. And is a Deer thumper.

What twist did you go with? Do you think a 28 " would be any better? Really wanting to build one and trying to get all the info I can

All depends what you are trying to achieve. If you want to try and run the upper node with 140's use at leas a 28" tube with a combination of generous free bore and a .062" fitted pin. Mine runs 2770 fps and came in again even tighter at 2880.

I don’t think a 26” or 28” barrel will make a huge difference in overall accuracy performance but freebore will when selecting bullets. Personally, if I were wanting to run 130 grain bullets, I’d want a shorter freebore than I would running 140’s. I have two 47’s with 26” barrels running 140 Berger Hybrids over H4350; one is a Hawk Hill at 2804fps and the other is a Bartlein at 2841fps. Both of these chambers were cut with a 0.163 FB. I’m in the process of ordering a reamer with a 0.147 - 0.150 FB so I can start out with 130’s and change to 140’s when the throat erodes. Many running 120 grain bullets are using a FB in the low 0.120’s.

As for powders, i’ve had better results using Varget with the lighter 120’s and 130’s and H4350 with the 140’s. The RL’s are suppose to do well but my rifles shoot so good, I’ve found no reason to change.

6.5x47 Lapua is amazing. Great speed for minimum powder consumption and the brass is tough as nails. 26” 8.5 twist Krueger shoots 130 gr HVLD GREAT AND FAST. 3010 FPS with Varget (39.0) & 450 primer. Love it. Glad I went 26”.

Thanks Bob, I'm going for it. What would be a good powder and load to start with?
I personally like both RL17 and H4350, my loads on both are 40 Grns shooting a Berger 140 grn Elite Hunter, and CCI 450 primers. The RL 17 gets me 2860fps, and the H4350 gets me 2750fps. It took some time and a lot of shooting to figure out my pet loads, just because I cant leave well enough alone. And My barrel likes .020 off the lands, and alittle dirty. It gets mad at me if I clean it too much. Bob

Thanks Bob ,I have not pushed the button yet as I'm still researching the round and components
