6.5 x 47,222 rem mag)

I came into possession of a small light rifle. It is a mini mauser action with a douglas barrel. The numbers on the side of the barrel say 6.5X47 imp. The reloading dies that came with the rifle indicate the round as a 6.5 X 222 remington mag improved. The round is a necked up 222 rem mag round that has been blown out with a 40 degree shoulder.
I have shot the rifle with the suggested reloads that came with the gun and accuracy is great. 1 hole groups at 100 yds with 120 grain bullets from the bench. The older gentlemand I got the rifle from says he had it built to use for deer. It is light, accurate, and according to him deadly.
Here is my question. Is anybody out there familiar with this round. The 120 grain bullet is death on coyote but can the little round push it fast enough for reliability on deer. Does anybody have any other loads for the round other than the 120 grain I was thinking of 100 grain or maybe 129 and giving the rifle to my nephew for him to use.

I have an XP100 pistol chamberd for the 6.5x47,non improved).I have yet to have a deer go more than 30 yds. after being shot.I'm using 29.3 grs.Win.748 Rem 7 1/2s 123gr. sierras. My self imposed range limit is 200 yds.with the pistol,It is a dream to shoot BTW the barrel was put on in the 70s it still shoots under MOA.......Good Luck an enjoy

Thanks. I am thinking about putting a synthetic stock on the rifle. It is in great shape but the wood is probably worth more than the rifle and I don't want the stock dinged up. The gun has no recoil to speak of and yesterday we were shooting with the reccomended load that came with the rifle 30 grns 748 and 120 grain speer bullet. According the the info I got the velocity is 235o fps. We shot over 100 rounds. I am still amazed at the accuracy of the rifle. I just would like to shoot a little heavier bullet 129 hornady or maybe 140 grains. I know if the bullet is placed right with the load I have it will do its job, dead deer) but wonder if the heavier bullet would be better in case of an angling away shot.

In angling away shot, quartering away), just shoot for "between the front legs" and bullet doesn't have any more resistance than in a broadside, lung) shot.

Anyway, if you need penetration you're stretching the limits with that small cartridge. And if you find a bullet that penetrates, you'd probly have to shoot for the shoulder in broadside shots, since lung shots wouldn't drop the deer fast enough, little resistance, little mushrooming).

I'd say just stick with the recommended load. The guns shoots great with it and with those reduced velocities the Speer bullet is as good as any. And having just one load helps your nephew to concentrate on shooting instead of remembering the come-ups etc.

I don't know what twist you have, mine is 8.5.I've never thought I had the need more weight than I use now,the 123s work just fine). Also you should be getting a little more velocity than 2350 I'm getting 2378 from a 15 in.XP pistol and it shows to be a moderate load in my pistol.Case life with sensible loads is forever,I believe I've culled maybe 30-40 cases since I've owned the cartridge.I bought this and a 6.5 IHMSA XP from an old WWII buddy of my fathers in New Mexico in the mid 70s.
