6.5X47

Wow, I am impressed w/ those velocities. I shoot a .260AI 28" Shilen Sel Match barrel 1:8" w/ either RL17 or H4831SC/ Lapua 139's (naked bullets), and get 2920FPS with warm loads and almost 10more grains of powder w/ the H4831SC. This has got me thinkin for my next barrel

I am currently working up a load with my 6.5x47 Lapua and the 130 Bergers, I found good accuracy at about 41.5 grains, but I still didn't see pressure signs, I'm going to push it harder and see what I find, but with 41.5 gr. It shoots 1/2" at 150 yards from bipod. I didn't take a chronograph that day so I don't know how fast they are going.

I think I'm going to start a new thread and tell you guys about my load development with 130 Berger VLD and Reloader 17.

Hi Erik,

Did you start a thread for the 130 Berger VLD's. I'm looking for some load information for this bullet but cannot find a thread on it.

Never started one, been really busy lately, hope I can get around to it one of these days.

hi guys , well i am just about ready to join the 6.5X47 ranks . got a 1-8.5 tw kreiger 30" long . got the brass on the way and a bump die . i'll make my own neck sizer die and seater.
plan on shooting 120 to 130 gr bullets want to get this going for the winter matches at Bridgeville De. 600yds. IBS.

OK, maybe you can offer some advice, here’s the story: RPA Quadlite with a 1:8 28” Lothar Walther barrel. 130gr Berger VLD’s with a COAL of 2.801 when put .010 into the lands.

Looking to start loading with R15 and working up to around 38gr. According to Quickload this is going to give me 2950fps.

Does this sound about right? or would you have any other suggestions.

Thanks
Brian

Actually, 38 grains of RL15 is quite hot in your set up (73,139 psi.), remember that you must increase the "Shot Start Pressure" from 3625 psi. to 10825 psi. when jamming bullets into the lands. The figures you have are good if you jump the bullets, so be careful with that.

35.9 shows to be the max pressure for RL15 when jamming the 130's into the lands at 70* F @ 2864 fps.

I suspect you will find best accuracy between 35.0 (2807 fps.) and 35.9 (2864 fps.) of RL15.

Hope that helps!

Certainly does Erik, thanks.

That’s why I always ask at the fountain before drinking the water.

p.s. any advantage using R17?

Yeah, alot! You can push the 130's over 3000 fps. with Reloader 17... RL17 would be my pick for anything 120 grains and over in the 6.5x47 Lapua.

If you try RL 17, start at 41.0 grains and work up from there until you see pressure signs, I suspect 3,100 fps. or better before you see pressure signs, but there's only one way to find out!

Let us know what you find out!

Will do, might take a couple of weeks to set everything up. But like Arnie - I'll be back.

I have just got back from testing RL17 with pointed 139gr Lapua Scenar bullets.
My normal load of 38.2gr of Varget with these bullets gave me 2930fps in my 32.5" barrel.

RL17 lifted this velocity to an AV = 3049fps with a 42.0gr load and CCI450 primers. An amazing increase in velocity (119fps) with zero pressure signs. I tried 41.0gr of RL17 for an AV = 2942fps and 41.5gr gave an AV = 2990fps. I also tried the 42.0gr load with the plain vanilla CCI400 primers and got an AV = 3068fps. I dont know why the CCI 400s gave a higher velocity but thats what the CED 2 chronograph recorded.

The 42.0gr load was accurate despite having a poor ES = 46 and SD = 17. The 41.5gr load also had good accuracy but with better figures of ES = 27 and SD = 9. I think I will split the difference and try 41.7gr which should give around a reliable 3000fps.

This powder certainly delivers velocity but cant match Varget for ES and SD figures. I need to try the powder out in competition and see if I can refine the load to produce some better statistics.

Thanks Ian, good information. Where abouts were the bullets in relation to the lands?

I tried 0.006" and 0.016" jam for the bullets and in my chamber (long for 140gr bullets) the 0.006" jam was all that was needed.

I have tried both jump and jam with my Varget loads and 0.006" jam is the best in my setup, its the same with RL17!

I shoot 130 gr. Berger VLD's at 1K using 39.2 grs. RL15 and CCI 450 primers. Velocity is 3036. No pressure signs and shoots well at 1K. My freebore is .213". Had Dave Kiff make this reamer to my spec. Actually sent him a case with a 140 gr. VLD seated the way I wanted it. (boattail junction half way down the neck). Ended up shooting 130's after trying both. Will work on the 140's later. This is with a 30.5" Brux barrel. The firing pin has been bushed by Greg Tannel on my Rem 700 action. I highly recommend this. Absolutely no cratering.
I reached over 3000 FPS with 140 VLD's and Rl17 without overpressure. Seemed to shoot better with Rl15 however.
The guys at the WV 1000 yard club seem to like 140's and Rl15.

I did some checking on the temp sensitivity or RL17 and found this great work by a contributor to 6mmbr.com: http://6mmbr.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=3680481&trail=8

Basically it seems that RL17 increases pressure/speed at the rate of 0.8fps/degree F or 1.4fps/degree C.

I'm now of the opinion a lot of the ES I was getting testing the RL17 velocity in my gun was caused by letting the round heat up in a hot chamber at the end of a 10 shot string. The 10 shot string was used to simulate real world competition shooting conditions and then I fired of 5 more loads with the CCI 400 primers. I think this would account for the higher velocity I recorded when firing off these last 5 shots.
