6.5X47

Darryl Jones reported similar velocities with the berger 140's and N550 back in his load testing (see week 72 guns of the week he got up to 3000fps). Got me really excited but as we know, some rifles can just do this every now and then - figures become more solid if a few are doing it

No doubt it is a super efficient cartridge and good brass. I am using 10 grains more and pushing the pressure boundaries to get same velocity in the 6.5x284. WOW.

I have a 6X47 and I am shooting the 115 grn Burgers 3150 with 38 gr of R17 out of a 28 inch barrel. I just find it hard to believe that you can load 40+ grains of powder in that case and shoot a 140gr bullet.

Bigger bore diameter!

Erik,
Just wanted to tell you that the ES. on that 42 gr. load of RL-17 and a berger 140 was 14 with the vel.at 2968 and the group .388 i will be working with that in a few weeks after i get a few loose ends taken care of.......jim

Isn't that sweet? The ES is 15 in my gun! Looks like I saved you alot of time developing loads, I'm glad! ;D

Are you jamming the Bergers?

I shoot my 6.5x47 out of a 22 inch hart barrel. I am using 36 gr of Varget and getting around 2735 fps with the 140 grain Berger's. I have not tried the RL17 with the 140's yet. -Kyle

Not trying to be a wise ass but maybe your cronographs are like mine, off by about 3% on the readings. I was also getting some nice readings on my 260s until I shot across a new cronograph and then double checked it against another one at the range.

The two newer ones were within a couple of feet of one another. I was close to 90fps off of their readings. No joy in mudville!!!

Agreed. That is why I only use my chronograph to get basic data for ballistic charts. Measuring ES numbers gives you a false sense of security unless you have a high dollar radar system. Read the instructions on most chronographs and at best they have a margin of error of +- 1 %. With a 3000 fps bullet that can give you a difference of 60 fps. I go by group size more than chronograph ES numbers. -Kyle

How do you guys tune your loads for 600yd plus shooting with a chronograph? Do you set up at the bench and see what load has the smallest ES? So no matter what the chronograph is reading if its 5% high or low this is how to determine the best load for long range? Then when your out in the field you match you MOA in the balistics programs and work it backwards to figure out your actual velocity? For example I set up my 6.5X47 zero at 100yds. At 600yards it takes me 10 MOA for my 600 yard zero and at 1000 yards it takes me 24 MOA you take those calculations and plug them into a balistics program to determine your actual velocity?

Yes, you can use a ballistic program and tweak your speed until all your drops match, sometimes you need to tweak your BC also.

I don't shoot a 6.5X47 but Jason Baney's ladder test method has worked for me for everything I've tried. http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek070.html I do most of my testing at 300 yards then use the average velocities from my best load to figure the come-ups to 600 and 1000. The new Berger BCs have been spot on. Even though I use a high quality chronograph with Infra-red screens, I have experienced a lot of weird chronograph readings and so I choose the load based on what I see on the paper, not ES and SD from the chronograph. But the average velocity, with the obviously bad readings thrown out, has given me reliable comeups.

Dennis,
My load for the 130 JLK is 38 gr. RL- 15 and a Wolf SRM primer, .0015 Nt. and in .010.
The 140 BERG. 42 gr. RL-17 and a Wolf SRM primer,.0015 NT. and in to a square mark. Start a little lower these are up there......jim

jim sounds like you got that gun shootin . are you going to be at the Varmit shoot at south fork on the 5th ? if yes look me up i have a few questions for you . The Rifler

I'll see you on Sunday I am not going to shoot the varmit hunter . i will shoot sunday for the ground hog match .
Mike

Load update!
I'm now running 38.2gr of Varget with CCI 400 primers and the 139gr Scenars (pointed). Out of my 32", 8T barrel with the Scenars jammed 0.005" I'm now getting 2930fps. Jamming the bullets made for an increase in velocity without any pressure signs.

I have finally taken delivery of some RL17 and will see what it does out of a 32" barrel. I'm guessing with Erik's loads and CCI 450 primers I should be looking at 2960fps. Let you all know how it goes after some testing!
