Thanks for the help. Is that a max load at 2900?

I don't understand your question, sorry!

Why don't you tell us what you're trying to do so we can help you better?

I get about 2925-2950 with 139 Lapua Scenars out of a 28" barrel.

Erik, thats high velocity with the 139gr Scenars. I get 2920fps out of a 32" barrel with 38.5gr of Varget and the 139gr Scenars but thats pushing the case to the limit of repeatable use. I have dropped the load to 38.2gr of Varget for 2900fps with longer case life resulting.

What loads of RL17 are you using to achieve 2950fps out of a 28" barrel?

Congrats on your 300 yard F-Class record!

Ian

Thanks Ian!

The usual disclaimer applies here, this load is safe in my gun, please work up with caution!
I am using 42 grains of Reloader 17 to get about 2925 from a 28" barrel, I saw pressures signs at 43 grains with a velocity of 3041 fps.

With my hunting 6.5x47 Lapua with a 25" bbl, I can push the 130 Berger VLD around 3000 fps., but my accuracy load is about 2950 fps.

I think the 6.5x47 Lapua is one of the best midrange cartridges around (ask Don Nielson!), very efficient and accurate! As for a hunting rifle, the same applies plus the fact that you can load 140 gr. class bullets to magazine length because of the shorter case compared to the 260.

I believe Reloader 17 is one of the best powders for the 6.5x47 Lapua because you reach pressures at about 105% case fill ratio, all my accuracy loads appear to be right around 100% fill ratio, perfect!

Ian, one thing I forgot to mention is that at that velociy with RL17 (2925-2950), I'm on my 8th firing on my brass and the primer pockets are still nice and tight, I bet they will go another 5 firings!

Thanks Erik, thats valuable info you has passed on and much appreciated. I just might have to try some RL17 as soon as it becomes available in Australia!

I am currently working up a load with my 6.5x47 Lapua and the 130 Bergers, I found good accuracy at about 41.5 grains, but I still didn't see pressure signs, I'm going to push it harder and see what I find, but with 41.5 gr. It shoots 1/2" at 150 yards from bipod. I didn't take a chronograph that day so I don't know how fast they are going.

I think I'm going to start a new thread and tell you guys about my load development with 130 Berger VLD and Reloader 17.

Eric,
I gust tried 42 gr. RL 17 in my 6.5x47 with a 140 berger. It ran 2968 average for 10 shots the group was about .4 i think i better look in to it a little more. The barrel was a Kreiger 28" with about 1500 rounds through it......jim

Nice to hear you are getting velocity and accuracy! Nice to have 6.5-284 velocities with about 10 grains less powder isn't?

-Erik Cortina

Erik,Oh yea.....I have been run 130 Jlk's at 2900 with RL-15 and it shoots in the low 2's but this raised the bar for the wind.I didn't run the numbers yet but i will after i try it again. It was so simple to get it to work,i seat the bullet to a square mark on the lands and .0015 NT. and let her rip.........jim

Great results guys, I was thinking of trying a 6.5*47 in one of my next 6.5 barrels but these results have sealed it for me. If I can find some RL17 I am going to join the club and buy a reamer.

Wow, are you guys really getting 2900+ fps using 42gr of RL-17 and a 139gr Scenar? I have a 28" .260, and I load 42.7gr of RL-17 driving a 139gr Scenar, but I only get ~2825fps or so. It is surprising because of the case capacity difference between the two cases. I'm building another gun that I was gonna chamber in .260, but maybe I'll try 6.5x47L.

just remember it was 70 degrees that day, i plan to try it again and see if the numbers are there the second time. It shot fair but it did good speed but that was one time. It seemed to gain 30 fps. for every .5 gr.above 41 gr.......jim
