6.5x284 xp100 bench gun

In the process of getting a xp100 built with a brux 8.5 twist barrel. Its going to wear a McMillan benchrest pistol stock. What do you all think would be a good barrel length for said pistol. I guess a better way to put it would be where performance wise would the barrel length be too short for 6.5 284 and more appropriate for say 260? I want to stay with the benefits of 65x284 but don't want to wield a 31 inch barrel on a pistol chassis.

Nope of my rear grips wear barrels longer than 20" and a few are down to 16" but wouldn't do a 6.5x284 shorter than 18".. You'll be surprised at how well the short fat barrels shoot...

Don't own any rear grips anymore, all of mine are center grip , here is my latest, a 6.5x284 HS Precision heavy barrel (15" + brake). Does just fine with 120-130 gr ballistic tip and accubonds. this is used on the bench and in the field. I know several others are running 16"-18" barrels (and longer) on their rear grip handcannons

Most of my XPs are 16" not including brake. Iv been told 15 is minumal you want to go. Im building a 7mm Dakota right now. It is going to be 18".

I was told by a very good ballistic guru. The most speed is built in the first 15" of the barrel.

I have a couple of 17" guns that are shooting very close to rifle speeds. With in a couple of hundred fps of 24" barrels.

XP hunter over on Specilty pistols is running a 6.5x284.

I have had a 6.5x284 mid grip xp-100 for several years. Mine has a 1-8, 5c Broughton barrel that measures 17" from the recoil lug to the muzzle, no muzzle brake, and is throated for the 142 SMK's. With a mild load of RL-22, I am shooting 2680fps and it is scary accurate.
