6.5mm x 284 Repeater ?????

cncmill

Erick Crouthamel (Crouthamel Precision)
Guys, I need your help. After building my first benchrest gun myself, and with the help of this site and all of you, I feel the need to do it again. (I think I have the sickness.) I built a 6.5mm x 284 and figured since I have a reamer I might as well do another. This time I am thinking of doing a long range, lighter varmint gun as a repeater. I have a 6.5 Krieger #4 contour sportster barrel blank already.

The first question is, am I nuts doing a repeater with this cartridge?

Second question is, if I am not nuts, then what action do I use? I could get away with a short action (Rem. style) with a single shot but not for a repeater and a long action seems way too long for this. My over all length is 3.165"

Third question is, would another style action be better? Mauser, savage, etc. I am open to all suggestions. I would prefer to true a stock action rather than purchase a custom action like I did on my BR gun, but I will do whatever is needed.

Thanks in advance for all your input.

Erick

Unless I could locate and acquire an RPA Quadlite repeater, I'd probably go with a Savage out of expediency. Most any 308 WIN - capable action ought to work if magazines suitable for the fatter 284 cartridge are available, right?

I would build it on a long action for sure. I have two 6mm-284’s one is on a long action Rem 700 the other is on a short action Rem 700. My dad has a 6mm-284 and a 6.5-284 both built on Rem 700 long actions. On our long action rifle’s we have no problem with feeding or bullet selection the same cannot be said with the short action I have it is real tight as a repeater. With those long 6.5 bullets trust me you want a long action. As for the action I would get a Remington 700.

I built a .260 on a long action so the bullets did not have to be jammed a mile in the case, a 6.5x284 would almost need a long action to use any but the lightest bullets and keep them out of the case.

dakor is right.
Don't bother trying to build it on a short action.
I just did that a few months ago with a Savage short 308W mag box.
Yes I can jam some long bullets deep into the case and get it to cycle after altering the mag lips.
The 85 gn Bergers I originally intended to use fit fine also.
Mag length is about 2.830 coal.
VLD style bullets? forget it at that length.

So far accuracy has'nt been good at all. My Target barrels shoot the little 85's well but this sporter barrel seems to hate them.
Next step is try another scope. Thats how bad it shoots.
Most likely I'll end up putting a 243 / 7-08 sporter tube on it and making life easy.

Savage makes 6.5x284 long action repeaters. Getting one of those would make the build easier
