6.5mm SAUM - suitable powders

Hey guys,

Apart from H1000, what other powders work well in this cartridge?

There is a bit of a shortage of H1000 at the moment here in New Zealand. However I can get Rel17, Rel19 and H4350. I am looking at running the 130 - 140gr projectiles.

Rifle is going to be a lightweight mountain rifle, Krieger 24 inch 8 twist barrel, blueprinted Remington 700 short action with Wyatts extended box mag and fitted into a Bansner Hitech stock.

Can someone give me some starting and max loads and also potential velocity? I am also very keen on getting an idea on the pressure figures using the above mentioned powders.

Is it also possible to use .264 Winchester Magnum starting loads and powders?

I don't know if this helps but my 6.5 WSM loves RL17 google load info and you will find some.

Hi Michael, I'm in Auckland, has been shooting/testing 6.5SAUM for a wee while now. I used AR2217 successfully with 140 gr pills, just came back hunting in South Island with confirmed kill shot of wallabies at various distances, further being 720 yards. When time permit, I'm thinking of toying with AR2225 powder.

Hi NK, good to know you are here in Auckland. Maybe we can catch up at some stage?

How have you found the recoil shooting your 6.5 SAUM? Mines going to be a lightweight mountain rifle build, think I'll go with a Decelerator over Limbsaver. I'd sooner a slightly harder pad than squishy, the pad will last longer.

Hi Michael, I was shooting steel gong upto 1009 yards with 11° uphill angle last weekend. I'm so far quite impressed and happy with my set up. What action are you looking at building this light weight hunting rifle? I Will be quite busy for the next few week, after that we could catch up. PM if you are free.

Hi Nik.

Well, it's looking very much like my 6.5 mm SAUM will be back from the gunsmith next week. I ended up spending a bit more on the build, but I am thrilled with how it will turn out

I'm about to start loading for it, bought a 7mm SAUM Redding s type neck die with bushings and a Forster 7 mm SAUM ultra micrometer seating die (with the 7mm seater stem replaced with a 6.5mm).

I have 300 of the new Hornady 143gr ELD-X bullets and I have H1000 and Hodgon Super Performance powder to try.

I have just rejoined Deerstalkers so I can use the range, where do you normally shoot?
