Thinking about 7mm/300 wsm for my custom hunting rifle

Hey guys,

Was pretty much set on 7mm WSM, however I've been thinking about doing this as a 7mm/300 WSM.

This is purely a hunting rifle, being built on a M700 short action with Wyatts extended mag box, PTG fluted bolt with M16 style extractor and aluminium firing pin assembly. Barrel will be a New Zealand made Trueflite Ultra Match, No 3 contour (fluted), 1:9 twist. Stock is a Bansner Hitech.

Reasons I am thinking of 7mm/300 WSM are:

1. Longer neck (I will be shooting the 160 Accubonds and 168 gr Berger Hunting VLD's
2. Brass supply here in New Zealand for 7mm WSM is difficult to say the least, where 300 (& 270) WSM brass is plentiful, including Norma.

Will the 7mm/300 WSM drive 160 Accubonds at the 3K from a 24 inch tube. Is the 7mm/300 WSM a more efficient case design than the straight 7mm WSM?

I would like your advice please - or is it just as easy to stay with 7mm WSM?

Regards,

Michael.

They both work great for hunting as well as longrange . I shoot 168 vlds 162 amax and 180 vlds all kill whitetails hogs and elk dead . I get 2940 with 180 vlds out of true 7wsm 7-300wsm and 7saum with 26 inch barrel

On a short action hunting rifle, I would go with the 7 SAUM so you have more seating room in the magazine for high BC bullets. You would have similar performance as the 7mm/300WSM with like bullet weights too.
