6.5Creed Hunting Help

I’ve recently been shooting Lapua Scenar 123 grey box and 136L over H4350 and RE26. Good speed, about an inch at 160yds. 2800 plus. Currently moved up to 146gr and RE26, sitting at the bench right now with those.

Winchester M70 Coyote Light, 24” bbl.

I have had great luck with 130 grain Accubonds on Whitetails out of my old Swede in 6.5 x 55. Rarely was able to collect the bullet as 90% of the time I got two holes when I didn't get a pass through the weight retention was above 85%. I got much less meat loss than I did with Ballistic Tips and the deer died just as fast usually within 10 yards. I did have one that went 70 yards but nothing beyond that in upwards of 20 deer with that rifle and bullet, shots at distances up to 350 yards. Accubonds, they just work for your application.

I don't shoot the 6.5 CM but have shot the 6.5x47 L. for quite a long time, I would think H4350 would be a great powder.

About any bullet will work on deer, but it is hard to beat a Partition, Accubond, or Hornady Interlock. I use the heavy bullets in my Creeds and the 129s in my .260s. I really like the 147 ELDM, over Re 26 in my Creed. Another good load is the Speer Gold Dot 140-grainers over Re19. I have killed numerous deer with both of these, plus GOBS of deer with the 129 Interlock in my .260. It has not failed to do the job.

The 129 Interlock is inexpensive, dependable and very accurate. It will perform fine. H4350, Reloder 17, Reloder 19, Reloder 26 and some others will all work well in the Creed. It is very easy to load for and the factory fodder is also very reliable. Hornady Whitetail ammo is really good and not very expensive. A good way to build up a brass supply.

Great post here ^^

Deer are pretty light-skinned and relatively easy to kill compared to heavier built animals. I think we overthink deer rounds a lot. Turns out that you can kill a deer with most calibers, using most powders and several bullets.

Pick something you like, work up a load you like, and make your shots in good places. You'll have a successful hunt.

So, for those remotely interested, the build looks like this:

R700 s/a right handed "G" prefix action
I took a skim cut on the face as it looked like someone flatted it by rubbing it on a brick.
#4 Ragged Hole Barrel 1:8 that will be cut to 21"
If I can find a Timney I'll run it. If not, the X-Mark will be fine.
Vintage Remington walnut stock with ebony forend tip/grip cap
Stock BDL bottom metal.
EGW pic rail, 0MOA

Peterson LRP brass
Varget
Berger 130 VLD-H

Glass is up in the air but I'm looking for a well priced Leupy.

I don't shoot the Creed but have hunted with a 6.5x47L. Like was mentioned above, h4350 anf 130ABs worked very well. Plenty accurate and plenty of horsepower to get the job done at longer ranges out here in the west. At 100 yards I think I would stick with something cheaper though. I think Midway has the Hornady 129 soft points on sale (seconds) right now. No sense in spending twice as much on an AB.

I also use a 6.5x47. Bullets that have worked good for me are the 130 AccuBond, 130 Berger Hunting, and the 124 Hammer Hunter. Hammers are a bit pricey but I'd recommend them Super easy to load develop and awesome terminal performance. I have only used H4350 in both of my 6.5x47's.

Here she is, all built and she actually works!

Looks great! What scope are you going to put on it?

RL17, IMR4350, and H4831 all provided fine results in my 6.5 Creedmoor. 143ELDX shoot paper really well - never used them on game. If I were to go hunting deer, I'd load up 129SST though. The Hornady SST bullets have always worked well in 30-06 and I'd trust them to do the job in 6.5 too!

Howdy all.

I'm gonna build me a huntin' gun!!

Seriously though, I'm looking to build a nice little hunting rig for eastern whitetail.

I have a #4 sporter contour barrel coming in an 8 twist and want to use 130-ish class bullets in it. Shots will be no longer than 100 yards (he has the room, I just won't take them). I'm looking for suggestions on bullet/powder combos that will work as well as can be expected.
Accuracy trumps.

I've not gun hunted before (only bow) so I would really appreciate some guidance.

Thanks.

If I knew all my shots were going to be less than 200 yards, I’d look no farther than the 129gr Hornady Interlock or the 130gr Nosler Accubond. Both are very accurate and I’ve not had either grenade on deer or pigs and both are very reliable killers. H4350 and R16 are both very good, but for bullets up to 130gr, don’t overlook Varget either.

Thanks.
I have the Berger 130’s and Hornady 139’s loaded up with Varget. Not my first choice for heavier than 130 but I have it. I’ll run them and see where they’re at and decide from there what I want to do.

I also recommend the Sierra Game King. Very accurate, cheap, and a killing track record long before any of the other high tech bullets were even designed. They just plain work.

120 gr BARNES TTTSX,,,,,,,, Will not come apart and you would be lucky to find them even with a frontal shot. More velocity equals flatter shooting. Barnes probably lists loading data on their website.

I bought a new Savage in 6.5 CM. My very first loads were with a 130 Sierra Game Change and H4350. It shoots sub 1/2 inch at 100yds and under an inch at 200. I haven't got to try it on game yet buy my friend shot a doe last year at 130ish yards. He said she went about 20 feet then DRT.

Picked up a 6.5 Creed in a trade so I’m going through some experimenting myself for a deer load. Didn’t need a new deer rifle but that never matters.
Will only be trying two bullets - The 120 and 100 grain Ballistic Tips. The Ballistic Tips usually shoot and a better deer bullet hasn’t been invented.
This rifle won’t be used for overly long ranges so no need for a 140. I want as much speed(with accuracy)out of the little case as I can get. Getting some promising 3 shot groups, still fine tuning using H4350 and Big Game.
