260 Remington barrel?

I think I found why this rifle won't shoot, the barrel is horrible. A neighbor of mine just got a bore scope so today I took it to him to take a look. The chamber was fine but according to him it looked like it was rifled with chipped tooling.

I called Savage and was told to send it back so I'll get it out tomorrow.

WoW. I'm surprised you ever managed to wring 1 1/2" out of that.

You've had it 4 years? It will be interesting to see what Savage does.

This reminds me of why I want a bore scope. Just having trouble letting go of the $$$.

Nosler 120BT and Varget. Nosler 125 Partition and H414. These are the combinations I have rung out after a lot of research for deer hunting loads to shoot in my XP-100. My barrel is a factory Remington 15" with 1:9 twist. With the initial Varget/120BT load I was getting 1" to 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards using a 2x Leupold LER scope. I just put a higher magnification scope on the gun and hope the new scope, and the tweaking of a couple of loads, will enable me to cut the group size by at least half. Also have some 130 Accubonds loaded up to try....we'll see what happens.

I hope you get a better barrel and find a load that will shoot.

I contacted Savage today, they replaced the barrel at no charge. It's ready for testing and after the roll stamps are on it they'll ship it back. Hopefully after turkey season I can do some (more) load development.

Great customer service IMO. Yes it sucks the barrel made it past QC, but it's 2 1/2 years old and Savage is making it right.

I haven't tried Varget yet, but I do have several pounds, my 22-250 loves it.

My 260 shoots lights out with H4350 and the 130VLDs. I tried Varget and it worked, however, H4350 was clearly better. With a new barrel I expect your load development might a bit more predicable. Good luck.

The rifle is now ready to shoot. Savage had it for six weeks and I had to redo the bedding around the recoil lug before it fit in the stock right. I'm having the new barrel looked at with a bore scope before I shoot it though, just want to know what I'm starting out with.
