6.5 x 47 Lapua Brass

Since the 6.5x47 has a large primer and is a small,er) case, I think we need a mild primer flash. Here are a few good, bad and ugly. I have dozens of these, but can't post them all here. The comments are my opinion only and only as applies to a small case round for match use.

Russian Large Rifle,PMC) - good

CCI BR2 Large Rifle - good

Federal 210M - bad

Winchester Large Rifle - bad

German, VERY COOL! Man I thought the RWS was more mild! no wonder it gives me pressure when subbed for a 210M :D

Looking like BR2 ur russians first huh?

Definitely those two first. Send me an email when you get a moment, I forgot to save yours.

I've been doing a ton of work on primers over the last month or so. While we're talking about large primers for the 6.5x47 Lapua, let's not forget our baby, the 6BR. Other than one lot of Federal 205M from the mid 1980's that I still have, the best primer I've found for the 6BR is the Russian Small Rifle Magnum, second best is the CCI BR4. By the way, Russian "Magnum" primers, whether large or small have the exact same type and amount of priming compound ans the standard version. To the Russians the Magnum designation means a thicker cup. I've spent quite some time with the importer of the primers going over all the manufacturing specs and processes.

1980's Federal 205M,the new stuff flashes a LOT more)

And just to make sure everyone knows that all Small Rifle primers are far from equal, here's the Remington 7 1/2,laughingly called a Benchrest primer by the maker).

HI
Anyone done a hypothetical or bench comparison between the 6.5x47 and the 6.5 grendel??

In the process of getting all the bits together to build a grendel. Have all the bits except reamer-

Pros and cons of the 2 cartridges??
THanks

Does anyone know the, water) case capacity of the 6x47 SM to compare it with the 6.5x47 Lapua?

<edit> P.S. For Yo, Were you able to compare the 6.5x47 Lapua's neck thickness at the neck/shoulder junction with the rest? ,Some of their 243 Win cases have donuts there that they never used to have.)

German - Your primer pictures are reminescent of those Dean Grennell did years ago using infrared balck and white film. It's interesting to note that the Federals have changed quite a bit over the years and I wonder what the rational was behind it.

But one thing I will note, just because a primer is "hotter" doesn't rule out it's use for all applications. For instance, using RL-22 in the 6.5 X 284 with a 139 Scenar, the Winchester large rifle primer has produced the best combination od ES/SD, velocity and accuracy at 1,000 yards out of my rifle. Conversely, using H4350 in the same rifle, the CCI primers were far and away the best.

Likewise in my long range .338, the combination of RL-25, a 250 gr Lapua Scenar and a Winchester large magnum rifle primer is tops. Load testing is burdensome with that rig though.

I've noted over many years that different chamberings with different powders can have a distinct preference for a given primer. Even the same powder in a different chambering can display a preference.

Alas, load testing is still required to chase down that elusive best combination. Some combinations just seem to rise to the top as barrels and chambers become more uniform. In regards to competition loads I'm most familiar with the 6.5 X 284 and it would seem that most competitors are using H4350 or H4831 with CCI primers and a 142 SMK or 139 Scenar. Myself included.

Now, if Lapua would just introduce their version of one of the short magnum cases....

Rust, there certainly are primer/powder combinations that work better than others and my pictures aren't intended to say unequivocally "this is good and this is bad". The pictures were a project for another purpose entirely but grew into pictures of a lot of primer types for reference.

I spent yesterday morning at the range trying diferent primers in my 6BR and will do more of that next week. As you say, there's no substitute for putting holes in paper to see what's best.

Jim, the simplest way to take pictures like these with a digital camera is to turn off the flash, darken the room and trip the shutter. If the room is dark enough, it will remain open for several seconds, allowing you to fire the primer. If you darken the room too much you won't see anything but the flash on the picture. If you leave on some light, like a 25 watt bulb) you can get other details like the ruler that was used for reference in these pictures.
Here are pictures of a Remington 7 1/2 with the 25 watt bulb and with no light at all.

Hi German verry interesting pictures would you have a picture of the CCI 450 as it is used extensively in BR's i have great results with the rem 7 1/2 with 34gr Vargett in my 6mm Dasher seems better than cci450's and Russian Magnum primers.

Bill, no, unfortunately I don't have that primer. Because you and a couple of others have mentioned it, I will try to get a package and give it a go. It depends on finding it locally, however.

Headspace dims as follows with the .375 insert in the SP tool

6.5x47 - 1.460
6BR - 1.135
6XC - 1.510
6x47SM - 1.422
243win - 1.650

I've found Varget works very well in my .25 version of the Ruarg 6X47SM. Both for fire-forming,36g) and then on to 38.5 for most consistent groups behind a Berger 87g bullet. CLEARLY THIS FOR MY CHAMBER ONLY but such may be of interest.

See pic of rather marked case that I've just retrieved from hunting coat pocket after a tussle with washing machine's 1200 spin cycle! Such though still gives an idea of what the 6.5X47 would look like,funky/cute?) with an even sharper shoulder.

Cheers, Klenchblaize

Pitty you couldn`t get hold of a case from Joe the 6mm Competition Match and see how it slots in probably between the XC and .243

Klenchblaize,

What's the shoulder angle on your .25? Did you reduce the body taper compared to the original 6x47 SM? Do you have any feeding problems?

Thanks,

Lefty

If it wasn't such a pain to send this kind stuff through the post from this side of the pond I would happily forward one for either you or the Ed to inspect. I'll chase my gunsmith for a copy of the PT&G drawing that has the exact dimension but basically I've given it the "Akley treatment".

No problems with feeding in respect of taper but my bolt/extractor is letting go before throwing an empty to one side far to regularly. This makes it a real pain when you want to get onto a second fox or sika, deer) hind and calf in a hurry but instead find yourself pulling on a jammed case with a multi tool! Yep, two cases won't go into one chamber even if its a Nesika which frankly is not something I anticipated happening with an action touted so highly by the likes of VHA journal to name but one - or should that read Steve Timm?

Cheers

Klenchblaize
