A friend of mine called this morning with a slight problem in a new rifle of his. It's a savage 6.5x284 and this morning while sighting it in for a new scope, he had one case (his last one of the day) that had "soot" all the way back to the rim. He said his load is 44g vv165, 142smk and a cci br primer. He has about 50 rounds down the barrel and is using new lapua brass. He said that was the 9th shot and after dialing in scope, the group was still less than .5" even with the "sooty" round. Does anyone know what may have caused this? Is it anything to be worried about? I have heard that maybe too light of a charge will do it but I don't know if thats the problem. He says that book max is 47.2 for this bullet and powder. I don't have a vv book so I can't double check, so he is running less than max, but not too much. Any thoughts out there??
