What primers for 6.5-284 w/ H1000?

I'm wondering if I should switch from Federal 210Ms to 215Ms after having soot half way down the case with listed book "Max" of 55.5 grs with a 140 gr. bullet.

Funny you should say that! On my 1st 6.5 x 284, I had soot on the case body AND some periodic case "length-wise pressure dents"! I thought it was "well used" brass. But NEW brass did that same thing. Well a trip to my 'smith, via his Hawkeye, revealed nothing more than HORRIBLE throat erosion and firecracking. I had nearly 1600 rounds on it and dispensed with the barrel and a new one was installed. VOILA! No more soot / dent problems. To this day we can NOT figure out the exact cause of the anomaly>>> just the fact that it existed. HOWEVER, we do hypothesize that my initial 800-1000 rounds of VV N560 MAY have caused some inclusion in the barrel below the immediate surface that MAY have stemmed from extreme erosion or firecracking, that the "seal" from the case neck could not reach, or at least reach in time, to seal off the escaping gases. I did use H4350 for a match and H4831SC for a match and finally settled on H1000. My next barrel was EXCLUSIVELY H1000 and it never experienced that wretched deal! AND I got a solid 1700-1800 GOOD rounds out of that barrel! It is doubtful changing primers is going to cure that issue for you..

This a new barrel? Are you seeing pressure signs with that load? How many firings of the brass that's showing soot?

Some things to consider:

1) Book max typically is a load the manufacturer suggest you not exceed based upon their exoeriences in testing. While I can't suggest you blindly exceed their published data, it's entirely possible your rifle can safely use a little more propellant if you're not already seeing indications of high pressures.
2) You may want to neck turn to make your brass fit your chamber more solidly; if there's a pattern to the soot you're seeing it may be your necks are thicker on one side than the other.
3) Annealing case necks frequently helps keep neck brass ready to expand when cases are fired; cases many-times fired and resized will have necks that are work-hardened making them slower to respond to sudden pressure of firing.

Though I haven't used my 6.5-284's in some years I got great results using Wolf / Tula KVB-7 primers with H1000 when I did.

This barrel has about 200 rounds down the tube. I realize book Max is more on the conservative side but it's a little bit weird to have spot halfway Down the case on a book max. Yes, annealing every firing.

My last barrel was a Brux, 30" long. I shot exclusively 140 JLK bullets and H-4831sc powder with Wolf primers. I puled the barrel at 1,800+ and had no fire-cracking and a throat erosion of .043. I use the same bullet to test where the"touch is, before I ever screw the barrel on. I put that bullet in the die box and use it again when I pull the barrel. I confidant that I'm close using this method and for me much easier with the barrel off and vertical.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd
