6.5 x 220Swift AI information.

Is anyone aware of the 220 Swift being AI improved and necked up to 6.5 for a 6.5 x 220 Swift AI type cartridge ?

If so could you explain your knowledge and post links you have?

Definately an oddball, no info out there in internet land. But this case may be very close to a 6.5X55 AI, just slightly longer by .035..

Changeling -

Howdy !

I don't recall ever reading that that particular wildcat had been tried.

IMHO -
Notional " 6.5 Swift " base & shoulder case diameters are smaller than those seen w/ the common 6.5mm MILITARY cases.
Despite the Swift's fairly long length, case capacities come out like this:
Case Capacity Grains H2)
.22-250 43
.220 Swift 48
6.5 Arisaka 48
6.5 Carcano 49
6.5 MS 50
.35 Remington 51
.300 Savage 52

P.O. Ackley wildcatted .35Rem down to 6mm, for one of his many experiments.
I have wildatted .35 Rem down to .224" caliber. The case forming die set includes 3 step-down dies.
The first neck down takes the .35 cal case down to .308".

The second forming die, takes the case' necks down to .25" caliber. That is a scant .007" difference in caliber, than the 6.5mm bullet diam you indicated. That notional 6.5mm - .35Rem wildcat would have case capacity some 3gr> a .220 Swift-based 6.5mm wildcat.

For my $$$, .35Rem brass would provide the basis for a more-sensible ( an slightly more capable ) wildcat, than would be 6.5 - .220 .
.35 Rem brass is compatible w/ a .308 bolt face.

Best of luck in your endeavors!

While the .220 Swift has a 0.473" casehead, it's a semi-rimmed cartridge and the case body is a bit smaller. Capacity-wise it probably the same as a .243Win/.260Rem. Don't know what your goal is, but a 6.5-.220SwiftAI would be a reinvention of the wheel.

You might contact SSK Industries, I seem to recall them doing some 6.5 cartridges on the 220 Swift case.
