220 Swift Ackley Improved powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

A friend of mine in another country has a 220 Swift AI being built.

He doesn't have US powders available there. What he does have is ADI and Vihtavouri powders. This is a very overbore cartridge witch we have discussed so no further comments are necessary concerning this.
We are looking for a substitute/better powder then Reloader 15 and IMR 4831 in the above powders that are available to him.

Does anyone have "experience" with powders in this area relative to him reloading?

Adding a comment: 220 Swift AI means 220 Swift Ackley Improved, NOT a standard 220 Swift.

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

I'll bet VhitaVuori N550 will push them out at warp speed. Check out a Relative Burn Rate Chart and take your pick. ;)

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

Try some BLC-2 works in my Swift . I load 60 gr. Sierra HP ... Tommy Mc..

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

My 220 AI likes H380, 42.5 grains behind a 50 vmax. I have used IMR4064 for years with a 50 gr. Sierra it is a 14 twist.

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

He will want to try AR2208 and AR2209 which is varget and H4350 but in the ADI packaging.

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

For light bullets 55 and smaller N150 gave me super results in my .220 Weatherby Rocket. If shooting heavy bullets Vihtavouri N550 all the way!

Changeling -

Howdy !

I'm a believer in high load density.

VV160 should work great w/ 55's and 60's.

I also recommend your buddy try-out FED LR Magnum Match primers, should he get the chance.

AR2209 is listed as an H414 ( WW760 ) and IMR 4350 equivalent powder ( " ADI Powder Equivalents " chart ).

Re: 220 Swift AI powder information for ADI and Vihtavouri

Hello 357 mag, I gave some thought to your recommendation and think you might be right for bullets in the 55gr class that he is hopefully going to use (55gr BT) . I'm basing that on a ADI Powders burn chart, witch I really hate to do, these charts can be very misleading.

Anyway thank you for the guidance, the slower Ni60 might very well be the right ticket for really overbore cartridges of this configuration (SWIFT AI) if we can stuff enough in there with out disrupting the action in any way, LOL.

I really do appreciate your information, thank you.

I am in a different country and have not tried Varget.
My powder of choice for the 2 custom built .220 Swift A.I's I own, is RL17.
With 46.4 grains of RL17 in Norma cases and PMC primers the average velocity is 4087fps using 52 grain Berger FB Varmint projectiles and I have not maxed the load out but am very close to, but see no need to push it further. Quickload predicted a velocity of 3888fps incidentally.
BTW 49 grains of RL17 with 40 grain Nosler BT's has produced an average velocity of 4562fps according to my Magnetospeed, and superbly accurate.
Viht powder is finished down here or so the various gun stores have told me, the importer has dropped importation of it, so the choices of powder are now very limited.
Thankfully after seeing the great results from RL17, I bought up all I could and procured some 25 pounds of it. I have a mate that shoots a 22/250 AI and he has used RL15 & RL17 and has had great results from both, of the two RL17 is the go to powder though AND 2208 has performed very well in my mates 22/250 AI.
I would suggest that both AR2208 & AR2209 should work well and that 2209 would probably produce slightly lower pressures than 2208 but neither will produce the velocity of RL17. l just hope that more Alliant powder arrives soon !

regards
Mike.

i live in australia and my 220 AI loves ADI 2209 and RL 17, shooting 50 and 55gr bullets just choose your bullet maker.... 44.7 grs of RL 17 gets me 4030 fps with a 50 gr V-max.. with a nosler 55gr varmageddon 46 grs gets me 3909 fps, 47 grs gets me over 4000 and those loads are chronographed, accuracy is killer. ADI 2213 is also a very good powder in this case. i use norma brass and a fed 210 primer

When I had mine H-414 work very well with the 55's and IMR7828 did well with the 65 gr. SGK which is the load I stuck with. 3800+ out of a 30" barrel and an absolute laser out to 600 yard.

According to Quickload...

220 Swift AI

45 gr bullets, VV-550, VV-150, ADI 2209, ADI-2208

55 to 70 gr, VV-560, VV-160, VV-550, VV-150, ADI 2213, ADI 2209

75 & 80 gr, same as 70 gr powders as well as VV-570 & VV-N165

VV-550 VV-560 & VV-570 yield more velocity than VV-150 VV-160 & VV-165
