6.5 SLR problem

Hello members,

I had my gunsmith chamber a new rifle in 6.5 SLR, I have been using new Winchester .243 brass running through whidden 6.5 slr dies, but cannot get the brass to chamber. I realize this is a wildcat cartridge, but am wondering if the reamer he used is different from the dies I purchased from whidden. Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

I would try turning the outside of the necks a couple thousand' s and adjust your whidden resizer die to bump the shoulder back until it chambers . Sounds like you have a tight chamber or very tight headspace. Keep us posted.

How far will the brass go in or will it not fit at all??

The brass will chamber most of the way but, I cannot close the bolt very much..

use a brand new piece of brass, try to close the bolt applying some force to it. then check for markings on the end of the neck, meaning the area that you chamfer and debur. if you find markings on the neck, it probably means that you need to turn your brass a bit. if you do not find any markings, it probably means that you have a headspace issue. if that is the case, you need to bump your shoulders a bit. good luck

Size brass until it fits your chamber without the de-priming assembly.

When it fits, load that piece of brass with just the bullet, does it now still fit into the chamber?

If it doesn't, you'll have to turn the necks or get a chamber neck reamer.

We developed the 6.5 SLR cartridge and we sell Redding dies that work perfectly with the cartridge. Whidden did whatever he did making his lower priced dies, apparently off the 6.5 SLR chamber reamer prints we publish on our website, but we hd no input or control over what Whidden did (i.e. he did that on his own initiative and we were not involved in that at all). All I can say is we have heard your complaint somewhat regularly with people calling us asking why their Whidden dies aren't working. This is particularly troublesome to us because bad die sets create an impression there's something wrong with the 6.5 SLR, when there is not. This also holds true with our 6 SLR as well. If you want dies that work, just purchase the ones we sell, we guarantee they work 100%.

I have a number of Whidden products (including 6SLR dies and a case length gauge) and the ones I have work great.

I'd guess there is a fair chance you just haven't pushed the shoulder back far enough, or possibly your smith may have reamed the chamber short. Did you have go-no go gauges for the chamber job? It is a wildcat so they aren't really neededm since you are making your own brass/bullets but you need to figure out your as built chamber dimensions.

Is your die a bushing die (I prefer bushings so I can control neck tension) if it is possibly you need a smaller bushing, or you may need to tighten the bushing down a bit further in the die so you aren't getting a false shoulder at the junction. The first time through you can't do I the size 3/4 of the neck thing.

Is it possible the cases need trimmed to length? I have a Lapua IMP and I have to trim the new unfired cases a little before they will chamber. Matt

If the shell holder you are using in your press is too thick it will not allow the shoulder to be bumped enough. In the past I have ground/filed off several thou off of the top of the shell holder to get more shoulder bump.....just a thought. Best Wishes

Thanks Robert for bringing that up! I didn't know that! I've spoken to someone at your sites phone# a few times about a possible barrel and chambering a 6mm SLR.. I would appreciate info from you regarding if the 6mm SLR can achieve 3,250fps without pressure signs with H4350.. I'm asuming it can if the 6mm Creed can get 3,140fps with a long freebore and 41.8gr H4350, 26in barrel... That's what team GAP shoots...

Whidden dies are much better quality than Redding dies based on what I have seen lately. Whidden customer service is also much better. Redding is also way over priced for the products they are putting out. Having owned both, Redding will be loosing market share in the not to distant future. Competition is good for the consumer.

Now that you mention it I forgot that Whidden dies have pretty tight bases so it can't be that part of it..
