I know I’d be robbing performance but you see a good amount of 7 saums on shorts with the 180’s so figured the 6 saum with 156’s must still be able to run 2900 from a short. With a 156 in the SAUM, you’re really robbing yourself of case capacity in a short action.
I realize that isn’t an answer to your question, but I hope it helps in some way.
Switch barrel sounds great until you realize, you’ll almost never switch barrels in the field, and your gunsmith would need to be one of the best there is to keep your zero consistent between two calibers in two barrels on the same gun so you don’t have to dink with your scope. I’d wager nearly impossible.
I have an action wrench and barrel vise mounted to a stud in my basement. I switch barrels when they burn out. Zero my scope, and don’t switch until I burn the next one out.
If I want two different calibers, I’d almost prefer two different guns. You can’t have too many guns. Heck, until just recently, I’ve had multiple guns in the same caliber.
You will probably get there with RL26 for velocity. I think there are two common freebores. .081" and .120". I just think your bearing surface will be below the neck/shoulder junction to fit the short action. The nice thing is, those Bergers are happy to jump.I know I’d be robbing performance but you see a good amount of 7 saums on shorts with the 180’s so figured the 6 saum with 156’s must still be able to run 2900 from a short.
as far as the switch barrel goes I know switching barrels would need to be rezeroed. But I figured the rifle that it’s on is a hunting rifle. So I could throw the 6.5 saum for my medium game during the fall, then at the end of season switch over to my varmint caliber for coyotes all winter.
Well I was only thinking this rifle is already a switch barrel. 223 trainer in the spring and summer, then transition to the 20 tac for late fall for coyotes until spring again. I just figured the 6.5 saum might make for a nice whitetail set up for fall.So what caliber smaller than 6.5 RSAUM would you ‘switch’ to for coyotes that has a Mag bolt face? Just built two rifles. Switch barrel rifles are definitely a case where the expectation is greater than the realization.
not a saum, but same bulletwould like to order a hunter weight barrel for one of my rifles and do a switch barrel. Was thinking 6.5 saum pushing the 156 in a short action but wondering what kind of freebore to go with to be able to mag feed?
