6.5 saum short action?

would like to order a hunter weight barrel for one of my rifles and do a switch barrel. Was thinking 6.5 saum pushing the 156 in a short action but wondering what kind of freebore to go with to be able to mag feed?

With a 156 in the SAUM, you’re really robbing yourself of case capacity in a short action.
I realize that isn’t an answer to your question, but I hope it helps in some way.
Switch barrel sounds great until you realize, you’ll almost never switch barrels in the field, and your gunsmith would need to be one of the best there is to keep your zero consistent between two calibers in two barrels on the same gun so you don’t have to dink with your scope. I’d wager nearly impossible.
I have an action wrench and barrel vise mounted to a stud in my basement. I switch barrels when they burn out. Zero my scope, and don’t switch until I burn the next one out.
If I want two different calibers, I’d almost prefer two different guns. You can’t have too many guns. Heck, until just recently, I’ve had multiple guns in the same caliber.

I know I’d be robbing performance but you see a good amount of 7 saums on shorts with the 180’s so figured the 6 saum with 156’s must still be able to run 2900 from a short.

as far as the switch barrel goes I know switching barrels would need to be rezeroed. But I figured the rifle that it’s on is a hunting rifle. So I could throw the 6.5 saum for my medium game during the fall, then at the end of season switch over to my varmint caliber for coyotes all winter.

You will probably get there with RL26 for velocity. I think there are two common freebores. .081" and .120". I just think your bearing surface will be below the neck/shoulder junction to fit the short action. The nice thing is, those Bergers are happy to jump.
Switching barrels seasonally doesn't sound bad at all, and if the barrels are anything like my shouldered prefits, their respective zeros won't change, so you could even write down the necessary adjustments once you know them.

with a 22' or shorter bbl go with 135-140 gr bullet and .081 fb, with 24+ bbl go with 147-156 gr bullet and .120 fb with h1000 or RL 26 2900 should be easy with .120 fb and 26" bbl with .150 fb and n570 will scream with 150's

aslo will want 1:8 rot for heavies or faster depending on elevation

ADG brass

So what caliber smaller than 6.5 RSAUM would you ‘switch’ to for coyotes that has a Mag bolt face? Just built two rifles. Switch barrel rifles are definitely a case where the expectation is greater than the realization.

Well I was only thinking this rifle is already a switch barrel. 223 trainer in the spring and summer, then transition to the 20 tac for late fall for coyotes until spring again. I just figured the 6.5 saum might make for a nice whitetail set up for fall.

I also want a 257 blackjack to go with my 25 creed so might just skip the saum and go for the 257 blackjack

If you're building on a short action Rem 700 and don't mind spending a few extra dollars I'd do the Wyatt's Outdoor Mid Length job on it and it'll allow you to reliably run and feed your SA Rem 700 at an OAL of 3.200+ The kit is relatively inexpensive but it'll cost a little extra for the machine work to the action. Makes for a pretty slick setup for those mid size short fat cases that don't completely need a LA but could use a little more room than a SA allows. If you click on the link and scroll down the page Kevin Wyatt has a great video explaining everything. I've talked to a couple guys that are running these setups with WSM's and they love them.

not a saum, but same bullet
i have a custom 6.5 PRC & GAP is nearing completion of my second one. They just finished the barrel work based on my dummy rounds which are ADG brass & 156 EOLs. The bullet bearing/BT junction is set at the case neck/shoulder junction. My throat (Freebore) was .216. Both rifles are built on XM actions. My COAL ~ 3.1”

If you used a savage 10 you could load to 2.97” and fit the mags. Might help you. My 300 wsm works well Loaded to 2.97 with longer bergers

I’m building a 6.5 Sherman Short. Works great in a short action. I’m building with a Tikka T3x Action. I’m going to do a switch barrel. The second barrel will be chambered in 300 max Sherman. Here is a picture with the 6.5 saum next to a 6.5 ss. The ss is to the right. The saum is with .80 fb and a 140 Berger. The 6.5ss is with a 156 Berger. It’s still about 50 thou into the lands by my estimate. When the chamber is cut. I will get final coal. I am planning on shooting at 30 thou off the lands.
