6.5 SAUM on a pre 64 model 70 ?

I have a old model 70 magnum action and was wondering if anyone has barreled one up for the
6.5 SAUM? Were you able to make it feed?

Hal

You can chamber and get the round to feed on the standard magnum action. But a word of caution. Recut the threads to 1.0625-16. This will give more barrel thickness for the larger case dimension. There have been a few problems with the larger high pressure cases with the 1.00-16 threaded tenons.

More barrel thickness??? seems to me to be less steel In the receiver!!!

Yes Jim you are correct less receiver thickness. The barrel contains the radial pressures of the cartridge not the receiver. Some early model 70's chambered in WSM's had chamber problems because the barrels were to thin. That is why Winchester opened up the factory receivers to 1.0625 threads on later receivers.

I've done WSM's on the FN SPR actions with 1" tenons with no problems at all. I did run a .010" piloted tap and re-cut the receiver face on them. Barrels were threaded for a good fit and with the loaded threads I would think the receiver would in fact contribute to the hoop strength of the assembly though.

I had an early 70 Stealth in 243 WSSM (same case body dia as WSM) and it was a sod to get the bolt open. I was subsequently told this was a result of the too thin barrel around the chamber. The chamber expanded excessively with a 65,000 psi MAP cartridge and when it contracted back onto the case walls gripped them so tight, the chamber was really reluctant to let the case go.
