6.5 mm Remington Magnum

I picked up a Remington 600 in 6.5mm mag. 25+ years ago and I've never taken it hunting.
What are your thoughts on using it for deer or hogs. I'm a bit perplexed on the rifle because it is kinda short for the cartridge. Looks like a long range cartridge in a guide gun.

Thats about what it is. Think of a 6.5-06 chambered in an 18" barreled gun. I have one too, but its just sitting in the safe also. Should be fine for deer or hogs, with the right bullet. Probably get 6.5 Cr performance out of such a short barrel. Remington also came out with the 673, in 6.5 RM, but with a 4" longer barrel, and there was a short run of Rem 700 BDL's in the late 60's, chambered in the 6.5 mag. Wish I would have kept mine!! Think Ruger did a short run of 77's in 6.5 mag also

The 6.5 Rem mag will work on deer and hogs...usually with short barrels, the heavier bullets in this instance 140 grs lose less velocity than light bullets, when the same bullet & powder combo is compared to velocities in long barrels.
I shoot its big brother the 350 Rem Mag, model 7 20" barrel...brass made out of other available magnums like 7mm, 300, or 338. It will shoot cheap light 158 gr 357 mag bullets to the 310gr Woodleigh.
200 Barns 2940 fps, 250 gr 2626 fps, 280 gr A swift 2430 fps, 310 gr 2260 fps...altered the mag to feed 2.920" cartridges. These are the early Short Mags...and try some of the new powders, not just the old powders listed in the manuals...like maybe RL26 for the 140 gr bullet..for max effort hunting load.

I had a play with that case some years ago, necking the 350 to 30 cal. Worked very well - surprisingly (not) producing 30-06 velocities - and slightly above. Built on a P14 action, it took a few deer, and was later recut to 30WSM. A close buddy still owns the 350 Mag he built on a 600 action with a 22in MAB barrel.

Third from the left. Same case as the belted 264 Win. Mag. just left of it, but shortened to fit short-actions. Why didn't it take off? (Far left is 6.5-284 Norma. Far right 6.5 Creedmoor with 260 Rem. just left of it.

i got a 660 about 2 years ago.loaded up some 120 nosler bt and they are into the poeder case part.called nosler and was told that this was ok and trhats where they will end up.its loaded with 4350 du pont and remington 9.5 magnum primers.will have to look up charge though.

For hogs & deer you should have no problems.

And yes, Remington messed up when they released the 6.5mm Rem Mag & 350 Rem Mag in the short barreled rifles.

Had they released them in the Model 700 with a 24" barrel, i feel they would have been more widely accepted.

Biggest complaint Remington got from those was the muzzle blast.

Remington did release the 700 with IIRC, a 24" tube in 6.5 RM and 350RM. Back in the late 60's. I had one of the 6.5's about 20 years ago and wish I had kept it.
They did release the 673 with a 22" bbl. in both calibers and 308, I think around 15 years ago.
