6.5 Grendel necked to 20

Anyone neck down a 6.5 Grendel to 20 cal? Does it have a name other than 20x6.5 Grendel? I have a bit of Lapua 220 Russian and want to build another 20 cal for the 55 grain bergers I have. Yes I know 6.5 Grendel would be easier to form and that is still an option. I already have a 20 br, 204 Ruger and a 20 practical. 20 PPC is an option as well, but was intrigued by a 6.5 Grendel wildcat.

If you're slinging 55's from your 20 BR wouldn't a 20 Grendel be a near ballistic twin to something you already have? I'm all for building new stuff but it appears you already have the 20's pretty well covered so why build something that is so near to one you've already got, instead, if you want to sling the heavies maybe look at going bigger with something like a 20 Creedmoor, 20GT, 20 XC, Or, if you really like the Grendel case start gathering up 22 ARC brass, it has a smidge more case capacity then the Grendel, and build a 20-22 ARC.

Easy button would be to build another 20 BR.

Simple answer is because I want to and have almost everything I need!

Actually, they would have the exact same capacity, and as of last month 6.5G brass was a lot easier to find and can be noticeably cheaper (0.70 ea for starline brass).
You're correct, I briefly forgot the 6ARC isn't quite the same as a Grendel case it's actually a tiny bit less and the 22 ARC is basically the same as the Grendel.

The 20 Titan is the 6.5 Grendel necked down to 20 caliber. It was developed by Todd Kindler to shoot the 55 grain Berger 20 caliber bullet. 3700 to 3800 fps with the 55's. Over 3900 fps or slightly over 4000 fps with the also discontinued Berger 50's. Never tried with 40's.

The Titan is described in Todd's ,"Terrific Twenty's" book.

I've shot a 20 cal Grendel neck down off and on for several years.. We called it the 20 LBC as the Grendel had not escaped the copyright clutches of Alexander at the time. It's decent enough and if you could get the 22 ARC brass it would be far easier to make than using the full 6.5 case. Ballistically it is about 100 FPS or so better than the 204.

I built one on a Howa mini a few years ago. Just shot the 40gr BIBs and really didn’t shoot too much before I moved onto another shiny.

I've been working with the 22 Grinch, which is formed on the 6.5 grendel case. I've been necking down to 22 in two steps, going down to 6mm first, then down to 22, using a Redding Type S 6.5 Grendel bushing/FL die and simply switching bushings. I've been using Starline brass (hoarding what's left of my stash of Alexander Arms/Lapua Grendel brass), and as long as I anneal after necking down to 22 and before firing, I'm not having any split necks. Depending on the neck diameter of a 20 grinch reamer, you might need to turn necks. The attached photo shows a fireformed 22 Grinch beside a 6 PPC, so you can see the Grinch has a bit more case capacity with the shoulder blown forward and a 40* shoulder (looks a bit like a smaller Dasher).

The 20 Titan, (Todd Kindler's described 6.5 Grendel necked to 20 caliber), will push a 55 grain Berger easily
over 3600 fps. I've got it to almost 3800 fps but it's hard on the brass and bolt lift becomes a little stiff.

If you can find Todd's book, "Terrific Twenties", the round is described in detail.

Without pushing brass hard, what would be a comfortable speed with accuracy?

a Grendel case necked down, if you want. Or go with the 20 PPC and a 1/7 twist barrel. Then you can shoot 55-80 grain Bergers or other bullets very well. You have all you need, it appears, other than a set of dies for a 20 PPC.

I have the same bug, gonna go with a different remedy though. In the process of ordering a 20GT reamer, I plan on necking down 22GT Alpha brass. I also have a pile of 55 grain Bergers that need a rifle just for them. Currently I have 20-222, 20PPC and 204 Ruger for 20 cals.

Good luck, it always fun to play around with whatever your floats your boat!
