6.5 Grendel necked to 20

I'm also a 20 cal fan, but have had such easy forming & good results with the 20 Tactical that I haven't pursued making a 20 Grendel or 20 Grinch. I've got 20 Tacticals built on Howa Mini & M700, both with Bartlein 1-9tw bbls, and both shoot the Berger 55s accurately, with 3400fps being pretty close to max.

When it comes to heavy bullets in the 22 Grinch, I've not gone beyond Berger 85.5 Hybrids, at 2960fps with MR2000.

Unless my math is all screwed up which is possible lol the .005 freebore won't work very good with a 55, would need more like .110

20 GT dummy round headed to JGS for a reamer. Not sure what the freebore will be, they can base it on the dummy round. Doesn’t look that different from the 20 Grendel imo. Fun!
That makes for a really good looking hot rod 20 cal cartridge! I think you mentioned once before you'll be using Alpha 22 GT brass for the parent case so I'm assuming this will be a "no turn" reamer or will it be a tight neck and you plan to turn them?

It doesn't matter but I am curious what the neck thickness is on those once they've been necked down. If you know, great, if not no worries just curious is all. I haven't worked with Alpha brass much so I don't really even know what the typical neck thickness is with their brass but it is supposed to be really good brass.

I’m on the road but it’ll be easy to measure the neck thickness of a piece of 22GT piece of alpha brass that has been necked down. I’ll do that tomorrow and report back. The reamer is gonna be set up for no neck turn. I sent Zack three pieces of brass and a couple Berger 55 gr 20 cal bullets. Anymore I just like getting the gun builder involved with reamer designs and Zack has been great. I can tell you he said the he called out for .237 neck for the reamer, that might help in the mean time.

If i wasn't doing a 20 grendel I would do this in a heart beat

I have a suspicion 20 arc or at least a 20 cal eld vt is going to come out this year. Hornady announces new products late oct to early november, so we shall find out soon! I am eagerly waiting to see what happens before I buy my next barrel!

It'll be interesting to see what you get. Just guessing I'd imagine they're around 15-15.5 thou which would leave you with somewhere around a .234 - .235 loaded neck dia. so a .237 neck reamer would leave you with about a thou per side but if they're thicker then that a .237 neck may be cutting things a tad close.

The folks at JGS are always top not to deal with and if you sent them some necked down brass they'll get you what you need. Unlike PTG that is more like Forrest Gump's momma saying life is like a box of chocolates where you never know what ya get you can always rely on JGS reamers being what you ordered as well as being what they say they are.

Do you know something? Please share!

Hornady has always had an affinity with small calibers and varmint shooters. One just has to look at the 17hmr, 17HH, 204 and all the bullets they offered back in the day specifically for varmint shooters. I cant help but think if Doug Derner was still alive and well we would already have another factory 20 caliber and a long range bullet in 20 caliber. For those that didn't know Doug he was instrumental in the development of the 17 Hornady Hornet and was a wonderful person who was taken from us much too soon. Of course Joyce Hornady was quite the varmint hunter too, I will always have a very fond appreciation for all things Hornady. Of course I use and test all the major brands and like them as well but I really feel that Hornady is poised to offer the next big thing to small caliber shooters.I understand all the current component shortages and world affairs have put a strain on new 20 caliber offerings but really feel the time is ripe for another 20 caliber cartridge and bullet. Sorry for all this rambling but sometimes I just can't wait to see what will happen next in the small caliber world. I really do miss SCN and Todd's input too.For the mean while I guess I will go shoot one of my 20 wildcats
Matt
