6.5 Creedmoor in 28-30" barrels for F-Class

G'day,

Anyone here run a 6.5 Creedmoor for mid range 300-800yds F-Class? I currently run a 6x47L but want something with similar ballistics and cost to run but better barrel life mainly. Also dont want to run faster then 2800-2850fps with 140gr class. Mainly want a mild recoiling rifle for use in mid range comps.

If your already shooting a 6x47 and your wanting to go to 6.5 cal why not just shoot the 6.5x47. Neck the brass back up and your good to go. Just my thoughts on it as it is a great caliber and is easy to load for with 140 hybrids.

I'd run either a 6.5x47L or a 260Rem for the sake of brass availability, (Lapua makes both) and if I were planning to shoot 140s in a single feed I'd probably go with the 260Rem for the slightly greater case capacity, but by all accounts pretty much everyone who shoots any one of the 6.5 triplets loves the way they shoot.

My shooting partner and I both shot 600 yd mid range for the first time this summer at 4 different matches at Billings, MT, Worland & Casper, WY using the 6.5 creedmoor & 140 bergers. Both classified as expert (Keith did shoot master in two of the matches). The rifles are not purpose built fclass, stocks are Manners T2A and McMillian A-3 adj, ~ 28" barrels HV Bartlein & MTU Kreiger. Front rest Hart & Bald Eagle. No problems with the Hornady brass but we're not pushing it (41.5 gr H4350, getting ~ 2,850 but we are shooting at elevation 4-5k).

Other guys are shooting the 6.5x47L & 260 improved and doing very well.

I am thinking about the 6.5x47 but it does seem you have to push it to run 140gr VLD in it. I'd rather not have to run really high pressures. Majority of my shooting is at sea level or within the first 1000 off feet so go that to contend with as well. If I do run a 6.5CM Id try form it from palma brass so id pretty much have a extended 6.5x47. Its another 70 thou in case length but that lets you have 52-53gr case capacity vs the 6.5x47 with around 45-46gr case capacity.

I'm running 140vlds 2800 to 2850 in my 30" tube. Zero pressure signs. A buddy of mine runs the same veloicity in a 28" tube with no issues at all. We are both burning H-4350. My 6.5x47 is a 60lb heavy gun for 1k Benchrest. It will shoot 3.5"-5 shot groups at 1k. Just my .02 8)

Cheers good news. I prefer not to run H4350 as it carbons up a ton compared to other powders I run. Has anyone run other powders besides H4350?

It doesn't carbon up in our Bartlein & Kreiger barrels...

You should easily get 2800-2850 fps (and probably more if needed from 28" barrel) from 6.5X47L using 140s with RL15, Varget, H4350, N550 and my go-to powder N150 (to mention a few).

does the current 6.5 creedmoor print not work? im loading hybrids 0.040" out and my OAL is long. shouldnt have a problem with 140 VLDs.

are you cleaning often because you're seeing accuracy degradation or vertical issues or coppering? otherwise, i dont clean my barrel often at all (300-400 rounds). lots of people have gone to this methodology and my cold bore and accuracy/precision is more consistent. vertical is a lot more consistent and i am consistently printing more X rings than when i was cleaning after each range session.

that being said, i have a 26" bartlein, running 43.5gr H4350, 140gr hybrids @ 2880 fps. no pressure signs at all and im on my 6-7th loading on 6.5 hornady brass. lost one piece of brass due to loose pocket primer and thats it.

its a tactical setup though

I clean because one, cleaning cant hurt your barrel done right, and two It keeps it consistant as when I get upto 40 plus rounds on barrel POI jumps about 1-1.5MOA higher as the pressure increases. Found that out at 1000yds about 2 months ago.

I use this rational, SR BR guys clean a whole lot, if it doesnt hurt then when they are trying to get groups in the zeros, then why will it hurt us? Provided the correct regime for the barrel is used. I have two different 6mm barrels and both require different cleaning regimes due to different loads. One takes 15mins start to finish the other takes hours.

Regarding the print, I cant seem to find one. Ive asked PTG for one and no luck so far.

Cheers. I've read it before but this seems to work for my barrels so ill keep going that way. I get good x counts and awesome vertical so far and barrel life hasn't seemed to suffer.
