30-284 for FClass

...nobody offers a SRP for large cartridge cases besides the BR design for the 308.

That's why I added my post earlier; I've been under the impression that the 308WIN cases made with with SR pockets by Lapua (later Alpha and Peterson) are the largest capacity cases made to date.

There are several cases now with lesser capacity and SR pockets, notably 260REM; 22, 25, 6 & 6.5 Creedmoor; 6XC from Alpha Munitions and many of these same along with a 243WIN from Peterson Cartridge Company.

So it's not a stretch to think maybe SRP would work in 284WIN too, or its 6.5mm variant.

I don't think your initial post is all that far from a real possibility. Drill out and pressing in a sleeve is a real possible option for priming with small primers. Probably some work involved but not out too far out there in terms of somebody making it work. As long as Lapua brass lasts, it would be a waste of time.

There is such an animal?

(You wouldn't have a product code for that, would you now? Or a link you can post to where it's being sold?)

I'd thought the only 6.5-284 brass out there was exclusively LR primer'd stuff?
oops - my bad.

The issue with using a 30-284 for F-Open is a fairly straightforward one of BCs and readily attainable velocities in a given cartridge. The box G7 BC of a 180 Hybrid is ~0.349, and a straight .284 Win will typically push them in the 2800 to 2820 fps range. The box G7 BC of the 200.20X 30 cal bullet is 0.328, and most F-TR shooters are pushing them at around 2650 fps from a .308 Win case, although a few are running them at slightly over 2700 fps. Realistically attainable velocities for the heavier (215 gr, 230 gr) .30 cal bullets decrease noticeably, even though their BCs will be a little bit higher, and you generally can't push them fast enough to make a significant difference.

By analogy because of the lower BC, the same is true with the 30-284 case. You would need to push a 200.20X 30 cal bullet to a velocity of at least ~2945 fps to match the wind resistance of a straight .284 Win with 180 Hybrids [on paper]. That is simply not a realistic number for a 30-284 case. Sure, you could run a 30-284 in F-Open, but you're going to be giving up a fair bit of performance as compared to a straight .284 with 180s. So your wind calls would have to be that much better to really be competitive. Not impossible, but there are plenty of other cartridge options for F-Open that also fall slightly behind the performance of a straight .284 Win such as 6.5x47 Lapua, .260AI, or the 6.5 Creedmoor, if you don't mind giving up a bit of performance for some other perceived benefit. Because of the other good options available, I'm not sure why someone would choose the 30-284 as an option, although you certainly could if the idea of using a 30-284 really appeals to you.

Thanks for the responses all. To clarify for a few posters above that think i am looking at a 30-284 as a new build as my only f open cartridge, please see original post. I have a 6mm dasher and a 308 barrel on this rifle now. I currently shoot 308 in an AUS specific F Class Standard discipline that uses 308/223 with 155gr (80gr for 223) projectile ONLY. 8kg rifle and any rest. Think 308/155gr version of FOpen.

The "idea" was to use my Dasher for the shorts (we shoot a lot of 300 to 600 here due to range limitations), and rechamber my 308 to a 30-284, or has been suggested a 30/06AI for windy days or longs until i wear that barrel out... this is a compromise in the interim and not intended to match a hot 7mm. Once that barrel is worn out then i would probably go a 284. I can use JBM Ballistics and i can work out t he differences in bullet drift. Looking for anyone who has gone down this path.
No.. WSM SAUM is off the table as i dont want to have tyo buy as new bolt.
No.. i am not looking for a 7mm now as as i am looking what to do with my current barrel.

Then again, we have some very good F Stan aard shooters at our club and i may stay competing in that discipline.

Just considering all options at the moment

Cheers
Adrian

After giving your idea a little more consideration I would keep the 30cal barrel chambered in 308win

As I am sure your well aware components in Australia can be a nightmare to source at times.

Having a 308barrel just gives you heaps of options. You can shoot F-standard if you wish or load it with heavies and compete (at some disadvantage of course) in F-open with heavy pills in that 10twist barrel.

Make sure you factor in the cost of a rechamber, dies and brass. Better off putting that money into your 7mm of choice IMO.

If you really want to persist than I would go the 30-06AI as it’s got the most boiler room out of the logical options on that standard bolt face.

Actually I just found this thread.

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/30-06ai-modern-high-bc-bullets.3840755/

If your able to safely propel a 215gr Hybrid at 2800fps like in the above thread then yes, 30-06AI is certainly worth a try

Thanks for digging that op Ben. That was the type of info i was after (just the 30/06 ).

I have some teams matches in Standard coming up, and will shoot the NSW Queens in standard this year, then might look at switching to the Dark side

Steelhead cases, circa 1985. Those would let the more aggressive loaders among us "git some".
