6.5 BR Improved?

It's kind of strange to post a question about such a small cartridge in a Forum labeled "Big Stuff" but, oh well.

I am building a rifle and had been planning on a 6.5 X 47 -.100" but I've been persuaded to go with a 6.5 BR.

Just in case I want to bump up a bit, is anyone making 6.5 BR Imp 40 deg dies?

Now your are talking two custom reamers. One for the chamber and another to make the dies.

I am actually curious as to why you would swing away from the 47L to a 6.5BR?

I am not familiar with the "long neck" 6mm Dasher brass. Can you send me a link please? What is the neck length?

I shoot High Power Rifle Silhouette and would use two different bullets, a Sierra 107 MK for 200, 300 and 377 meters and a Lapua Scenar 123 or a Pure Precision 120 at 500 meters. The 47L pushes the 107 too fast.

A 6.5 BR pushes the 107 about the right speed but the 120 PP bullet is very long, 1.42" and might intrude into the case too much. If that turns out to be true I would like to have the option to Ackley the chamber to get a bit more powder capacity.

A conventional Dasher does not have enough neck and would not give me much flexibility with bullet seating depth.

The long dasher brass is available from bullet.com right now. Norma just released it. The original dasher has a .248" +/- length neck. Norma is producing 6 mm dasher brass now with a .291" +/- length neck. Just came out.

Like the idea. The one objection I had to Dashers/BRX etc was the short neck. I have some 6.5 mm bullets that are 1.42" long.

Just not a fan of Norma brass.

We used to shoot full size Silhouettes at our club shoots. I was using a 6.5 BRX and it would not reliably knock down rams at 500m

The new Norma brass has been double stamped on the case head. This is a new case manufacturing process that has been added just for this new line of long neck dasher brass and the recent production lot of 284 Winchester brass Norma has offered. According to recent test it has taken quite a few high pressure firings (Don't remember the exact count) and primer pickets are still very tight.

I have seen a Ram rung with 7-08, 308 and 30-06. It is not about caliber or cartridge, nor is it about velocity, in fact too much velocity is a problem. It is about the ability of the bullet to transfer its energy to the Ram.

I have measured with a force gauge the amount of force required to push over a Ram. The maximum reading I got was 14.7 pounds.

Please, lets not travel down that rabbit hole. I am interested in the existence of a BR (preferably 6.5) case with 40 degree shoulders and the same neck length as the original with perhaps less body taper. The traditional Ackley formula.

Steve,
Go to the 6mm BR forum and look for 6mm BR 40 degree. That is the 6mm version of what you are looking for.

Everything that I am seeing there is also shortening the neck. The bullet I want to use is extremely long, 1.42", so I can't really afford to give up any neck.

It looks as though should I need to go that route I would need to have a reamer and dies made. Wouldn't be the first time.

The Grendel is a smaller case than the 6.5 BR and a shorter neck so that would not be a choice.

The Scenar 123 (.527 G1 BC)at 2,750 fps has about 24" of drift with a 10 MPH cross wind. I would like to be there or less.

The Pure Precision 120 (.510 G1 BC) at 2,650 has about 26" of drift with a 10 MPH crosswind.

Not less than that, perhaps a bit more.

the straight 6BR just necked up to 6.5 with right bbl length would probably get you 2750 with 123s without improving it at all and keeping the long neck,,

the Redding 6BR FLS die with a 288 bushing would probably work also,,

a 22-250 case might be a place to start also,

I am hoping so, that is where I picked that velocity. N540 might help too.

My friend is loading a 6.5 BR case with 33.5 gr of N140 under the 123 Lapua. I am waiting to hear back from him what velocity he is getting. He is using N135 for the 107's. I have a mind to try TAC.

The barrel I have should finish out at 26" but N140/540 is kinda fast so that might not make a difference.

I have access to a reamer for 6.5 X 47 L -.100" which is still a little long but I would prefer that to the -250 case.
